Presentation Abstract
Large-area afforestation and reforestation projects have been performed in China since the 1980s. It has been reported as one of the main causes of regional carbon uptake. However, these increased forest areas, in combined with increased leaf area index—so called ‘vegetation greening’, are also expected to biophysically influence regional energy balance and hydrological cycle through reduced land surface albedo, increased evapotranspiration (ET) and surface roughness. In this talk, I will give an overview of my PhD work on applying both remote sensing data and an Earth system model to systematically assessing the biophysical role of 30-year vegetation dynamics of China under past climate change. Several key scientific questions have been addressed from the Earth system view, such as whether afforestation would cause regional hydrological drought when its feedback to rainfall is considered and to what extent the 30-year vegetation dynamics in China have mitigated climate warming both regionally and globally. In addition, I will also provide introduction to the past and current advances on theory and approach of quantifying the biophysical climate impacts of land use and land cover change.
