Plus baby wipes. You'll be thankful after a night of eating questionable street food with the terrible "New Orleans Spice" that doesn't even exist in New Orleans.

so funny, I m so stupid! I have never been to New Orleans or eaten any food from there so I just assumed it was at least based on some New Orleans recipe.

Bizarre that anyone would want to go and live in a new country and think they can change it suit their own perspective.
Super arrogant and entitled. I don’t mean you, I know there are plenty with this mentality.

I mean you can do some tiny little changes. I’ve fairly successfully taught my kinder class to reuse/recycle their trash where possible. I know that’s like trying to hold back the tide here but hey ho. Actually curious as to whether that kind of thing would be considered arrogant/entitled to you, or if you’re meaning other behaviors?

I don’t see teaching the 3Rs as arrogant and entitled. Most international schools have an environmental angle in their curriculum and expect this to be taught. I guess even if you’re working in a bilingual school and hired as a western teacher you are expected to bring a western perspective into a classroom. And if there is anywhere to make a difference it’s in the classroom, right?
My issue would be if your project failed and this produced a massive chip on your shoulder and you went around shouting about how dirty and uncivilized Chinese people are, and how they constantly distribute single use plastic and nobody respects the recycling bins in your community and how the west is so much cleaner, and blah blah blah etc.
According_Stress8995
Yep agreed on all that.
I’m just saying I wouldn’t want foreign teachers to feel discouraged from doing positive things like this. Some degree of encouraging change is ok, but like you’re saying, it needs to be in the right context.
Also I’m under no pretense that I personally or the west in general is actually better. Just different. I for example will still waste an animal’s foot or head lol.

You are talking about the impact of generational mass migration to western countries, this thread is taking about a western expats and their barriers to having a fulfilling life in China. Not exactly an equal comparison.
Mohamed opening a mosque in London so he can practice his religion isn’t the same as a Ken going nuts about an old lady taking his photo, or a Karen having a meltdown because the shop attendant follows her around the shop.
CheesyCharliesPizza
LOL!
The "opening a Mosque" example is way more impactful and disruptive than the other examples you mentioned.
You've made the point opposite of what you were trying to argue for.

Don't try to make sense of everything. China is a different culture, if something doesn't affect you just let it go.
I have a workmate who gets mad at everything at the school, if they change the time of sth often or there is general chaos. It can be frustrating, but if it doesn't affect you that much just let it go.
I know it can be annoying but everyone lives in this 'chaos' and no one expects more of you from it, like they say 'when in Rome'.
This applies to everything.

get a good ebike with a good battery (be safe on it, helmet etc.) get as fast wifi as you can (VPN kills internet speeds so you need it fast to start with). for water situation either get a little dispenser thing that takes big bottles and buy 20L bottles delivered via waimai, or alternatively just get a filtration system for ur sink.
I realise all this stuff costs quite a bit but this stuff is investment into ur quality of life

Agree with everything except "as fast wifi as you can". Regardless of how fast your internet is (10/100/1000mbps) if your VPN is slow and can only support 1-3-5mbps faster internet can''t do anything about that.
Therefore, get the internet with the speed you feel comfortable with, depending on how many people live and use the same internet, and how many devices (such as tv). Usually for 2-3 people 100-300mbps which is more than enough for anything.
China mobile for the phone and China Unicom for the home internet/gaming/downloads/speed.
If you own a phone number in China, there is a high chance that your phone provider will give you at least a year or multiple year 1 rmb a month home internet package, these promotions go around all the time. (call mobile provider and ask for promotions).
If your building does not support your phone provider for internet, you can''t have the promotion. (often indicated by ISP stickers in the elevator).
You can set your mobile provider menu and customer service to English so whenever you call them everything will be only in English. You have to call them first and ask them to change your menu language forever.
