The Rise of Clickbait: What Does "Clickbait" Mean?

Have you ever come across headlines that are overly exaggerated or dramatic just to make you click and read the article?

They are known as "clickbait". Clickbait refers to sensational or misleading headlines of online content designed to attract maximum clicks and shares.

In English, we call these type of headlines "clickbait headlines".

They are meant to captivate readers and lure them into clicking the link.

Some characteristics of clickbait headlines:

1. They are often overly dramatic or make shocking claims,

such as "You'll never believe who won the lottery!" or "What the scientists discovered will blow your mind!".

2. They deliberately withhold key information to keep you guessing,

for example,  "What Tom Hanks said to Meg Ryan left her speechless...".

3. They frequently overpromise or make exaggerated claims,

such as "Do this and lose 5 kilos in 2 days!" or "Eat this once a day and live 20 years longer!".

4. They are usually brief but don't match the story accurately.

For instance, "Hollywood celebrity couple headed for divorce after..." but they are not actually getting divorced.

While clickbait headlines can be effective to grab attention and increase traffic, they are essentially misleading readers and compromising journalistic integrity.

Some examples of typical clickbait headlines are:

Let me know if you have any other questions!
