Zumba(尊巴)是国际流行的健身课程。

 Shepler

 Arizona Fur Con

People who like to dress up in elaborate animal costumes and take on "fursonas" gathered in Mesa this weekend for Arizona Fur Con.

One participant in the furry subculture compared it to dressing up for Halloween.

"The people that kind of see it as weird, I just say, 'Do you ever wear a costume on Halloween?' We just do that 24/7,'" Samantha Shepler said.

Shepler's fursona is Shiba, a Shiba Inu breed of dog that the 27-year-old describes as "a tiny, fierce bundle of energy."

While a furry includes those who like to dress up as animals with human characteristics, it also includes those who appreciate anthropomorphic animals through art, music and other creative outlets, according to the event's website.

Shepler led a Zumba session at the convention on Saturday at Delta Hotels by Marriott Phoenix Mesa and Mesa Convention Center.

Dressed in the head and tail of Shiba, a red-haired pooch with a fluffy golden tail, Shepler and more than a dozen people danced through remixed pop songs from Maroon 5 to Britney Spears. Some were in costume, some were not.

'It helps a lot of people out of their box'

Shepler is relatively new to the furry community; she was introduced to it by her wife about a year ago.

A longtime dancer, Shepler saw the chance to bring her craft to the fandom. She said both dance and fur-suiting are ways to help people overcome insecurities, adding that she hoped her Zumba session would give attendees the confidence to join the convention's Saturday evening dance competition.

Though being a furry might be an unconventional way to break out of one's shell, Shepler said it's something the general public judges too harshly.

"I just remind people that it's super fun and it helps a lot of people out of their box when they're not being judged by how they look or how they're moving or how they are at certain profiles," she said.

"You can just throw on a dog and dance, or just go out and talk to people without having these insecurities and anxieties — you have a barrier," Shepler said.

The furry community is diverse, with opportunities for people to express a wide array of interests.

"You don't have to have a suit, you don't have to have a (fur)sona. If you like to have fun and be artistic and to craft and just to meet people, there are a lot of people out here that want exactly the same thing you do."

Shelper said a common misconception about the furry community is that all of its members see fur-suiting as a sexual fetish. They don't.

She said there is that component of fur-suiting for some, as there is in virtually any fandom.

"We're not walking around as sex puppets," she said. "We're just out here having a good time. Just like somebody puts on a jersey to play sports, that's what I do — put on a dog to dance better."

Austin Solid, 23, described furry suits as "works of art" and said he doesn't imagine they'd be very comfortable for those who are part of the furry fetish community.

"The suits aren't cheap — no thanks," he said. "They are hot and sweaty."

Kayla Williams, 28, said the core of furry fandom is young people.

"It's all about being a family and supporting each other," Williams said.

"It's all about artistic expression and helping people open up and be themselves, and that's the beauty of it," she said.

Most furries, they said, see fur-suiting as an opportunity to be creative and outgoing in ways they would be too intimidated by without their suit on.

 A growing community

Williams and Solid make their living as owners of Arizona-based furry costume company Thunderhowl Studios.

They were among the several dozen vendors at the convention Saturday afternoon.

Williams has run a fur suit business since 2014. Solid recently quit his 9-to-5 job to devote himself full-time to the business, which they run out of their living room.

They said the furry community is large and growing.

"It started as a niche thing but now there is such a huge market," Williams said. "There is so much demand we just can't keep up."

They both have a fursonas, although they were all business at their vendor booth on Saturday.

Milo Henderson, as character Sunny Marbles, poses at the Arizona Fur Con in Mesa on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019.

Solid's furry is a dog, while Williams' is a cat-rabbit hybrid.

"She embodies all of my joy," Williams said. "When I put her on, all of my problems go away and everything is happy."

"I don't drink, I don't do any of that — the suit is it," she added.

Putting on the suits gives them an immediate burst of confidence, both said.

Solid said he doesn't fur-suit as much as he used to, but he said he has far less social anxiety, in large part because of the confidence the furry community gave him.

Williams continues to fur-suit regularly and doesn't appear to be stopping anytime soon.

"If I walk up to a crowd, I'm going to shrink down into nothing, but then I put the suit on and everything's fantastic," Williams said.

Arizona Fur Con runs through Sunday.
