  55 Lesson 9 - Industry and More Part 3 - FAQ - Portfolio, Industry, Style

P55 - 00:01 

 All right. That was a pretty deep topic. And probably the most abstract lesson in this entire course. I'm taking this part of the course, this little episode, to answer some of the most common questions that i've seen or have been asked regarding painting and also the concept art industry as a whole. 

P55 - 00:20回答绘画和行业的问题。  

Now I am aware that a lot of professionals are also taking this course. And there are some people who are working well into the industry already. Or there are people here who are just doing this for a hobby. So I'm also including questions that are very broad and general, but for industry related stuff, it certainly doesn't hurt to hear it again. And it would also feel very wrong to leave that out of the conversation.  

P55 - 01:11谈艺术不会脱离谈艺术行业。  

First of all, art styles. It's very natural for us artists to really wish and yearn for our own distinct art style. One that once people look at our article like, oh my god, that's so. And so's work, don’t even work without even having to look at a signature. Therefore I see the question of how do I achieve my own style floating around a lot. 

P55 - 01:33如何做到坚持个人艺术的？ 

I would argue that style rather than something that you carry yourself as a sub conscious collection of all the things that inspire you artistically combined and molded into one thing that comes onto the page. 

P55 - 01:48所有启发你的融合到一起。 

As you paint and draw, you will find habits that you fall into. Perhaps you really like drawing clothes in this one certain way, or drawing art in that particular method. And slowly that becomes your style.  

P55 - 02:00养成自己的绘制风格。 

I would strongly argue that it's not really something you can truly control. Sure, you can imitate someone else's work and to match the style of someone else for professional purpose. But for your own defining style, the one that is yours alone. 

P55 - 02:15模仿别人风格后有自己的风格。 

It's already there. It's an eight, it’s existential. It flows naturally onto the page and can be found in the corners of the cloth folds that you sketch, in the highlights of the hair that you painted. So celebrate it. 

P55 - 02:29比如拐角的高光，头部的高光。 

This is something that belongs to you and you alone. It is your artistic fingerprint on. The way to change it is to slowly shift your interests and consume different sources of inspiration. 

P55 - 02:40慢慢的写满自己的兴趣和灵感。 

Things beyond concept art, like editorial illustrations, architecture, fashion, music and sports. 

P55 - 02:47编辑插画 建筑 音乐 运动。 

Those things will then flow into your style naturally. 

P55 - 02:52喜好的都会流入自己的风格。  

Next a full proof portfolio. This one is tricky, because it all depends on what your objective is. 

P55 - 03:00文件夹取决于你绘制的对象如何。 

If you want to work for a specific company, and that's all you want, then you should definitely tailor your portfolio to that one company style. 

P55 - 03:08如果给公司打工，迎合公司风格。 

Or if you want to do a certain type of work, such as you only want to speed paints, then put a lot of speed painting into your portfolio. 

P55 - 03:15如果展示速写，文件夹放入速写。 

Make that the highlight. But honestly, for most of us, I would argue that we just want a job. 

P55 - 03:22大部分人为谋生学习技术。 

That's certainly how I felt when I first started creating my portfolio. Like we'll take anything that comes at us. 

P55 - 03:29最初作品展为了求职。 

in that case. The the number one defining thing for a portfolio, I would argue, it is accessibility. And presentation. 

P55 - 03:37要易懂易于展示。 

Skill is very important, of course. But if it comes down to between you and another person who was equally skilled, the person who presented their work better is going to get the job. 

P55 - 03:47同水平善于展示的人竞争机会高。 

Whether that's because they talked about the work better or if they simply had to work in a more neat presentation. 

P55 - 03:53要么表达或者展示清晰。 

They say in the industry that the big CEO would not be able to differentiate between good and bad art. 

P55 - 03:59有的说CEO良莠不分？ 

But boy, they can tell when something is crooked. So make sure that your website is clean and pretty and has all of your art on the front page like them, so that people need to click on as little as possible. As you can see on my website here. All you need to do is go to the front page and scroll down and you'll be able to see my card immediately. 

P55 - 04:19作品只需要展示在浏览页。 

Also. Yes, I would definitely recommend your own portfolio website. It totally goes hand in hand with the presentation part. 

P55 - 04:27网页就是作品展。 

Having your own custom URL just makes you feel more professional In everyone's eyes.  

P55 - 04:30有自己网站显得出类拔萃。  

The price of a website and URL is easily paid back in the first few hours of your first job. 

P55 - 04:37在最初的工作会回馈的。 

And eventually it will pay back for itself thousands of times over.  

P55 - 04:43并且会累积效应的回馈。 

Next topic. Number three, rejection, whether it's for a job or an internship, it's going to happen no matter what. 

P55 - 04:52工作也好实习也罢，受很多拒绝。 

There is no foolproof method of getting into every single company without fail, because there are just too many factors at play. 

P55 - 04:59太多的因素在起作用。 

When we create a painting, everything is dependent on us. We control the playing field. But once you start involving things like companies or just to other people, there are a lot more things that we can't control. 

P55 - 05:12公司其他人影响因素不可控制。 

Sometimes it's just because they don't have an opening or that they are looking for a super specific skill set that we didn't have in our portfolio. 

P55 - 05:19要么不开放，要么侧重技能暂缺。 

Or maybe this has happened to me before. There was a depth in the family, and the recruiting team was just like one person and they just had to go and leave. 

P55 - 05:28或者一个人离开另一个进来。 

Don't take it personally. We can speculate all we want, but we should not tie our self worth to our art and whether if it's going to be accepted by a company or a group of people, it's not a healthy way to look at ourselves. 

P55 - 05:41艺术不被接纳不代表没有价值。 

Instead we should turn our heel and we should try try again, at the next opportunity.  

P55 - 05:45不断尝试直到下一个技术。 

That is all part of a full proof mindset. And I promise you or one of these days the ocean is huge and you will catch a fish. 

P55 - 05:55那么多机会总有一个属于你。 

Next topic, number four, art school. This one's special to me because I took school is a myself When I was in high school and I was deciding whether or not I wanted to go to art school then, if you are also questioning the same whether you're a high school student about to go to college or if you're another professional who wants to change their major or field of degree. 

P55 - 06:16决定大学专业还是换专业？ 

I'm just gonna give you my own two sense. And this is just my personal opinion. for those who can't afford it or are willing to burden the cost of it. I can get worth it. 

P55 - 06:29承担起学费的，艺术学校值得。 

because an art school provides not just education but a community of people just like yourself who live and breathe art. 

P55 - 06:34认识到一群和你一样呼吸艺术人。 

I was kind of the only artist in high school, which is why I was taking schools and classes because there is no one else to teach me that stuff. But when I arrived at art school, I was just amazed at how everyone from teachers to staff to my colleagues are people just like me. I made lifelong friends. 

P55 - 06:51艺校的人有艺术天赋成为朋友。 

And these friends are the ones who pushed me and shaped me artistically. Is it expensive? Oh, yeah. I have a pretty hefty scholarship, but it is still not cheap. 

P55 - 07:02很高奖学金，学费依旧贵。 

But to me I value friendship and good people above all else. To me, that is priceless. These are friends that pick me up when I'm down and I get to travel the entire world with, who teach me things that go far beyond just painting about how to be a good human being. 

P55 - 07:18教会我做人扶持我的朋友无价。 

And I am willing to shoulder the cost for those kinds of people. 

P55 - 07:25愿意为结实那些人买单。 

But that's just my own opinion. Every single school is different. I personally went to the art center college of design and the people there alone made it worth it. 

P55 - 07:30个人去设计学院读书的。 

So ask yourself what you value above all else and whether such a price tag is worth it. This is a unique question for every single person. 

P55 - 07:39问问自己看重什么。价值多少。 

education wise, though i'd argue that you're getting a pretty amazing education already here and schoolism different. Ask yourself, are you looking for something more?  

P55 - 07:46问自己更多追求什么？ 

Now a 5th and final topic. What does it take to improve? This goes hand in hand with the idea of a full proof mindset. 

P55 - 07:59这是无懈可击的方式。 

But I'm going to be a little bit more strict this time. Back in high school, I met an artist who was working at pixar art animation studios. And I asked him, how do I become like you? How do I draw like you? And he told me that he started drawing quite late. And when he was at school he was a little bit behind everyone else.at the time. He was an international student. And in America, those who have a bachelors of arts, can only stay in the country for one year. If you don't find a job after you graduate. 

P55 - 08:25国际生找不到工作就要回国了。 

Essentially this was a ticking time bomb and he needed to find a job and thus he needed to improve. 

P55 - 08:32为找到工作提升。 

I remember this story so distinctly because it affected me so much. 

P55 - 08:36记忆犹新因为给我影响很大。 

He said that every morning he woke up, he tossed his shoes into the corner of the room and you would sketch them before breakfast and before anything else, his sketchbook never left his hand. And he was constantly drawing. 

P55 - 08:47早晨起来绘制鞋，雷打不动训练。 

And he stayed behind his studio further and longer than everyone else. In his final years, he was able to obtain an internship pixar, 

P55 - 08:55获得皮克斯见习机会。  

and he's been there ever since. And last i've heard from him and he's now in the lead position.

This is not an uncommon story. Many of the successful artists that i've met in life are all incredibly hardworking.

This is not a field where you can just cram a few textbooks and pass the test and get a job. 

P55 - 09:14不是死记硬背考试后得到工作。 

In the artistic field, you need to earn your stripes to become a skilled artisan, a true master of your craft. 

P55 - 09:21要有工匠精神。  

And there's no way you'll do that if you don't just practice, period. 

P55 - 09:25不训练是没长进的。 

When I was in high school, after hearing his story, I started drawing any time that I could in class. I would literally talk to my teachers and tell them like, hey, Mrs apple. I just love drawing. So i'll be drawing in your class. And that's just how I listen in class. I promise to participate in classes Please. Let me draw in your class. And more often times than not, they let me and I was able to rapidly accumulate hours.ratatouille.

You need to find your own hours. Be creative. Think outside of the box.

Use that full proof mindset to push yourself and strive for greatness.

 

56 Lesson 9 - Industry and More Part 4 - Practice & Improvement

 I am here to ask you for your final assignment. The last one. I know typically in most classes, they don't really ask for anything for the very last video. 

P56 - 00:12一般最后一节课不会提到作业。 

But I have something I wanted to ask for you to do for me personally. You see me paint demo after demo of all sorts of things and all sorts of methods. 

P56 - 00:22你看到我用不同方式演示了。 

And you have now done the same. So for your very last practice and improvement. I'd like you to make a painting for me, using any method that you like, something that really speaks to yourself as an artist. 

P56 - 00:40自由发挥用任何方式去绘制。 

And during this painting, think about what methods and techniques that you are using and how you're integrating In those very techniques. 

P56 - 00:46如何整合这些技术。 

This is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Now that you have the entire world at your fingertips, just being able to draw anything. The choice get pretty difficult. I want you in this painting, however, to really think about each and every step that we went through. 

P56 - 01:01思考每一步用到的知识点。 

from the black and white values, are you going to divide it into Nontan or Chiaroscuro,  to the composition. 

P56 - 01:09究竟选择哪一种阴影方式？ 

What kind of story are you telling? to the color. What is your light source and how will it affect your piece,

to the execution? Are you painting or photo bashing or both? 

P56 - 01:22绘制还是照片拼图？ 

And will you be implementing any perspective?

in this last painting? Please show me your steps. so that you're being extra mindful of demonstrating each of these key elements. 

P56 - 01:34有没有用到核心技巧？ 

And life is boring. If we just stick by the rules. So if you want to try something radical and crazy, go for it. There are no rules, only consequences. 

P56 - 01:46试错，没有规则，只有后果。 

for this piece. I want you to write me a 1 line sentence about your painting. 

P56 - 01:52写一行解释说明。 

Basically, you're painting in a nutshell in just a few words. I'll simply great and critique your piece, based on how well you were able to execute that idea. 

P56 - 02:00如何更好的展示那些思维？ 

So go off and be wild or be safe. It's up to you. And I want you to carry the spirit and idea through each of the paintings that you do after this, in general, in life, until you yourself have a strong grip on your process and know exactly what works for you.  

P56 - 02:17从过程中清楚什么对自己有用？ 

Maybe you've already found it. That's great. And if you haven't, you have all the time in the world to look for it. 

P56 - 02:25总是有时间去寻找到的。
