Production manager Felix Alfonso rushed through the hotel lobby at The Standard and took the elevator to Tim’s room. Forty-five thousand people were waiting in an arena in New Jersey, where the Electric Daisy Carnival had spawned.

Felix already knew on the way up to Tim’s room what was going to happen. It was almost comical how predictable this scene had become. Tim was like a four-year-old who refused to put on his boots in the morning. For some reason, he would rather check the traffic on a hundred different sites than take a shower, pack his caps and get down to the reception. It felt as if half of Felix’s job description was to drag Tim out of suites, despite his procrastination and trickery.

Felix knocked on the locked door. Of course, Tim didn’t open it.

‘Come on, Tim, we can’t be doing this, it’s not professional. We need to leave in a couple of minutes!’

‘Is that Tim time? I was just gonna jump in the shower!’

‘No, that’s real, actual time.’

‘Five minutes, bro!’

Tim time had become an inside joke, a kind of sliding scale which always meant that fifteen minutes ended up being at least forty-five. Forty-five minutes could, in the worst case, mean two hours.

It was hard to reason with Tim, because he was so charming in his foolish stubbornness.

‘It’s gonna be forty minutes to the venue,’ Felix tried. ‘I told you that.’

Triumphantly, Tim answered from the other side of the door: ‘I googled it. It’ll only take half an hour!’

They had just got one week in the Caribbean, Tim and Emily. There, they had eaten good food, Tim had tried out all of Emily’s skincare products and after a few days they had even found a beach that was so isolated that Tim could sunbathe in peace. But even during the holidays, the mailbox had been buzzing – an Italian promoter who needed to book a new date because Tim had cancelled when he became ill, a song with Lenny Kravitz that must be finished. The guys on Styrmansgatan had asked if it was okay for some fans to take selfies with Tim before a gig, and could he print and sign a document so they could arrange a new visa to Australia?

After the short holiday, Tim had done a bunch of gigs in South Africa before moving on to Taiwan, Indonesia and Thailand, and now they just were just arriving from a festival in southern Germany.

At many of the gigs in the United States that spring and summer, Tim performed in a booth the shape of a man’s head about five metres high, cast in hard white plastic. At the top of this strange colossus, the scalp was hollowed out and there was room for Tim and his equipment. With the help of wires in the ceiling, Tim was able to go out over the audience on a ramp from the giant’s forehead. Lighting from below created the illusion that Avicii was floating in the air, and when Etta James sang the chorus to ‘Levels’, a giant singing mouth was projected on the face.

Perhaps such an escalation in the stage production was necessary. Swedish House Mafia had shown that some Swedes could sell out Madison Square Garden and turn the ice hockey arena into a hedonistic nightclub. It was not without reason that the guy responsible for their special effects was called Pyro Pete – he would set off such large flames that those closest to the stage had a hard time keeping their eyes open. The other artists also did their best to make a lone DJ feel like a full experience. Deadmau5 now dressed in a special costume that read his body movements and got a glowing skeleton to mirror his movements on the screens behind him. The long-haired Steve Aoki climbed the stage rigs and threw cream cakes in the faces of his ecstatic audience, who had started holding up placards that read ‘CAKE ME’. It was this kind of bombastic experience that Tim needed to compete with.

But the large Avicii head required four expensive trucks to transport, took the stagehands half a day to assemble and was technically difficult to maintain. The first time they used the construction, at the Coachella festival, the computers broke down and Tim had to play the first songs in pitch darkness. It was a fucking monstrosity, quite honestly.

At the same time, the collaboration with Ralph Lauren had deepened. Now it wasn’t just Tim’s music that would be available in Denim & Supply’s stores – he would be the face of their entire autumn collection. Recently, they had recorded a campaign film in which fashion models in khaki shorts and fringed vests danced as Tim played for them in a warehouse on Long Island. Tim hated filming. Sober audiences in such an artificial environment, where everyone also knew they were being recorded. It had felt stiff and uncomfortable.

They were butting heads more and more, the artist and his manager. Sometimes Tim felt disconnected from the decisions. Recently, when Arash had complained that Tim forgot to mention him in an interview, Tim had replied:

I don’t like not being allowed in on the live shows at all, have asked several times to be involved precisely because I want it to be our thing and not just yours! Feel too much like a doll sometimes, which in some cases I am but don’t want it to become my image, and I am worried that I’ll be kind of like a Korean boy band controlled with an iron fist :P

The crew would this summer start flying between gigs on a private jet; Tim had chosen a luxurious ten-seater Cessna. There would be two decals on the plane: Air Vicii and Ash Alliance. Arash had also drawn up a new logo, which was now printed on the posters ahead of the gigs around Europe. It said Avicii just like always, but suddenly there was an addition: ‘Avicii, part of the At Night family’. In silence, Tim had begun to get annoyed at Arash constantly putting his name next to his. It was Tim who paid for the plane, for example – why would his manager really have his name there? Tim felt that he really made an effort to highlight the importance of Arash in all possible contexts, and he was the person Tim trusted the most in the world when it came to music. But sometimes it felt to Tim like Arash never got enough of the spotlight.

It was probably also the situation itself that had become increasingly tense and unmanageable. There were thousands of things constantly in motion, an entire industry that Tim really only got a sense of from the contours of his inbox.

Out there, outside his hotel room, so much was going on that could no longer be controlled. Lawyers and advisers, press consultants and fall collections, riggers and drivers and pilots, rights disputes and agreements and draft contracts. One never saw what the other was doing, and eventually, it all ended up in Tim’s lap. That’s how it felt. It was him who had to perform, him who had to do the interviews and the jingles and be photographed and prepare new gigs and make songs so that the fans were constantly fed with something fresh.

What would they do without him? Would Felix Alfonso go up on stage? Would Filip Holm be a model for the autumn collection? The Avicii brand simply could not do without Tim, that’s still how it was, in spite of everything. And he was not someone who could just be dragged along, nor did he want it to appear that way.

In his hotel room with light wood panels and a view of the Hudson River, it was him who was in control.

Felix and the others could certainly wait a little longer.

Felix
