今天继续聊词汇——

geyser——

1. 这个词的词源很有意思，来自于冰岛语里的一个喷泉景点；

2. 英文释义：a spring that throws forth intermittent jets of heated water and steam，表示间歇喷出一股股热水和蒸汽的泉水。

3. 这个英文释义中有几个词汇比较有意思，我们也稍微提一下——

   /.动词+forth表示……出来，比如throw forth就是抛出去，forth from表示out of从……出来；

   \.intermittent表示断断续续的、偶尔的；

   O.jet词源是法语动词jetter，表示抛掷，jets of就表示一股啦。

thermophilic bacteria——

1. 英文释义：of，relating to，or being an organism living at a high temperature与生活在高温中的有机体相关的，所以 thermophilic bacteria就是有名的嗜热细菌啦；

2. 前缀thermo-，词源为希腊语thermos，表示与热相关的，常见在学科名称中，如thermology表示热学，thermodynamics表示热力学等等；

3. bacteria其实是细菌的复数形式，而单数是bacterium，这个词尾变化来自于拉丁语，一个词尾变化居然能保存这么久，说明这个词真的不常用啊，哈哈！

bring to life the graphs……——

1. bring something to life可以形象地翻译成赋予某物生命，表示，使某事物显得形象生动；

2. 这里值得注意的是，因为宾语the graphs of optimal temperature for enzyme function过长，所以这里后置了，宾语后置在英语各类文章中不要太常见，所以，英语阅读最忌讳一字一顿地读。

optimal temperature——

1. 这里指最适宜温度，optimal有同义词optimum，比optimal更常见；

2. 名词形式：the optimum表示最佳结果、最好的条件，something is at an optimum某事物处于最佳状态；

3. 另外两个相关的常见词组：maximum temperature最高温度，minimum temperature最低温度。

enzyme——生物化学常见词：酶。
