本期为中国三大国家重点建设工程的西电东送工程（The West-to-East Electricity Transmission Project, WEET), 其内容如下：

        西电东送工程是西部大开发的标志性工程，且是在西部大开发工程中工程量最大、投资额最多的项目。它把西部省区煤炭、水能资源丰富的的能源储备，转化成电力资源，输送到电力紧缺的东部沿海地区，西电东送包括北、中、南三路送电线路：北线由内蒙古、陕西等省区向华北电网输电；中线由四川、重庆等省市向华中、华东电网输电；南线由云南、贵州、广西等省区向华南输电。“西电东送”的实施，将有利于西部能源资源优势转化为经济优势，减轻了环境和运输压力，对进一步优化资源能源结构、推动区域协调发展、促进生态环境改善等具有重要战略意义、还将带动中国设备制造业、电力施工业、建材业等的发展，推进我国社会经济可持续发展。

       The West-to-East Electricity Transmission Project (WEET) is one icon of the Western Development, also the project with the heaviest caseload and the largest investment. WEET converts abundant energy reserves in West China regions, such as coal and water, into electricity and delivers it to electricity-starving coastal regions in Eastern China. WEET is composed of three major routes for electricity transmission: the North Route, the Central Route and the South Route: The North Route delivers electricity from regions of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Shaanxi to the Northern China Grid, the Central Route transmits electricity from provinces and province-level municipalities such as Sichuan and Chongqing to the Eastern China Grid, and electricity on the South Route is transmitted from provinces including Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi, to the Southern China Grid. The implementation of WEET creates great chances for turning advantages in energy in West China regions into economic advantages, mitigating pressure on the environment and transportation, and is of strategic significance to further optimizing structures on energy and resources, powering up coordinated regional development and improving the eco-environment. Also it will drive forward China's industries including equipment and device manufacturing, power construction and building materials, and give a major push to our country's sustainable development.
