【译】叉婊Pitchfork评Mariah Carey 2017年单曲《I Don’t》

Mariah Carey is America’s least subtle national treasure. Her most recent record was called Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, her baby twins entered the world to the sound of applause from a live recording of “Fantasy,” and, just the other day, she was spotted wearing fishnets and stilettos on a stairclimber. It should come as no surprise that Mariah’s new song, “I Don’t,” is an explicit (though never foul-mouthed) response to her sudden split from her billionaire fiancé, James Packer.

Billed as “an anthem for women overcoming harsh breakups,” “I Don’t” finds the glittery goddess flipping her script from “We Belong Together,” “gass[ing] up the whip,” and belting her way towards new happiness. (To really drive the point home, in the accompanying video, she sets a wedding dress on fire.) YG is here, too, playing the role of ex-lover gloriously. He’s not quite sure why Mariah would want to leave this lavish lifestyle but concludes that every time she looks at her ring, she will dream of him. (For what it’s worth, in a clip from “Mariah’s World,” the singer makes a point of discarding her 35-carat engagement ring in the recording booth). The Jermaine Dupri-produced track skitters along dramatically as Mariah recounts how she became the “pity party of the year” after being blinded by love. “I Don’t” never reaches red-hot levels of anger, but it doesn’t need to. She knows exactly how to use her voice to express pain and regret. Even when she’s heartbroken, Mariah is her own master.
