中国文化之中国黄河（英文版）

Known as the mother river by all Chinese people, the 5,464-kilometer Yellow River is the second longest in China. The headwaters of this mighty river lie in Kunlun Mountains in northwestern Qinghai Province. It runs east through nine provinces and autonomous regions on its way to the Bohai Sea. It is not exaggerating to say that this river is a generous mother, because there are more than 30 branches and countless streams feeding it through its course. The upper reaches of the river start from Qinghai Province and end at Hekouzhen in Inner Mongolia. This magnificent river flows quietly, like a gentle mother, irrigating the farmlands and nurturing the people. Its middle reaches end at Taohuayu in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Here the river splits the Loess Plateau in half, like a diligent mother, forming the longest gorge. The lower reaches end in a delta on the Bohai Sea, like a selfless mother, giving out what she has to the ocean.

全长5464公里，被所有的中国儿女称作“母亲河”，中国的第二长河，这就是黄河。她发源于青海西北部的昆仑山脉，途经九个省和自治区，向东注入渤海。说她是一位胸怀宽广的母亲一点儿都不为过，因为有30多条支流和无数小溪汇入其中。从青海到内蒙河口镇的上游，她静静地流淌着，婉如一位温柔的母亲，默默地灌溉着农田，养育着儿女。河南郑州市桃花峪以上的中游，她像一位勤劳的母亲，将黄土高原一分为二，耕耘出整个流域中最长的峡谷。在下游渤海湾三角洲，她又像一位无私的母亲，倾其所有，注入大海。

It is agreed upon by almost all Chinese people that the Yellow River is the cradle of Chinese civilization, the spiritual home of the Chinese people. It is the waters of the river and its spirit that nurture the whole Chinese nation. The Yellow River is not just the name of a sandy yellow river. It bears special significance: the symbol of the Chinese nation, the spirit of the Chinese people and more importantly, the civilization itself.

如果有人问：“中华文明的摇篮在哪里？中国人民的精神家园在哪里？”所有的中国人都会脱口而出“黄河”。正是黄河的水，黄河的精神滋养了中华民族。 “黄河”二字，不仅仅指一条携带黄色泥沙的河流，而是中华民族的象征、中国人民的精神，是传统千年的中华文明。

Here, the stories of three cultural heroes: Suiren-shi who taught the Chinese to make fire by drilling wood, Fuxi-shi who was the inventor of hunting and fishing and Shennong-shi who invented agriculture, were widely spread. It was these three legendary individuals that began the development of civilization in the Yellow River basin. After that, many ancient Chinese emperors, like Emperor Qin Shi Huang, Tang Taizong and Genghis khan pushed the Yellow River civilization to a wholly new level of refinement, grace and spirituality which drew the attention of the whole world.
