9月23日，太阳进入天秤座。
“天秤座”，法语是“Balance”：
“Quel est ton signe du zodiaque? ”
——“Balance.”
（“你是什么星座的？”——“天秤座”）
而英语的“天平座”却是“Libra ”：
“What’s your sign of the zodiac?”
——“Libra. ”
（“你是什么星座的？”——“天秤座”）
Balance 一词来自拉丁文 “bilanx”, bi- (two) + lanx (dish, plate), 意为“两个盘子”， 就是指天平的两个称盘。（另一同源词是法语的 bilan：帐目，清单）。
英文的 "Libra (天平座) 一词本身就是拉丁文（天平，重量单位）。Libra 缩略为 lb(就是英镑£)，变形为 livre（法国古货币）、lira (意大利里拉)，都曾表示“一磅银子”。
想得到吗？livre 竟然和法语的“litre” (升) 也是同源词！（重量变容积啦？^v^）。
另一个同源词是“équilibre”（平衡），其拉丁语的词根为 aequus （equal）+ libra（balance, scale），意思就是“天平两边持平”，也就是“平衡”啦！
法语和英语的 balance 都可以是“天平”，但在英语里，balance 特指用于精密称重的“天平”，而法语的 balance 可以是任何称重工具。
例如：
Le pharmacien déposa délicatement la poudre sur la balance.
The chemist put the powder carefully on the balance.
药剂师小心地把药粉放到天平上。
Elle se mit sur la balance pour voir si elle avait perdu du poids.
She got on the scales /weighing machine to see if she’d lost any weight.

Balance在英语和法语里都可用来表示贸易，财政上的“平衡”。

Au cours du conseil des ministres il a surtout été question de la balance commerciale (de la balance des paiements).
The balance of trade (the balance of payment) was the main subject of discussion at the Cabinet meeting.
内阁会议上主要讨论了贸易平衡（国际收支平衡）问题。
在表示银行帐户“余额”时，英语的 balance 常翻译为法语的“position, solde”等。

我的帐户余额是多少？
但如果 balance 表示的是“重量，重心”的平衡，一般译为法语的 équilibre 等词：
The tightrope walker lost his balance.
Le funambule perdit l’équilibre.
走钢丝的人失去了平衡。
His mother’s optimism acts as a balance to his father’s pessimism.
L’optimisme de la mère fait contrepoids au pessimisme du père/compense le pessimisme du père.
他妈妈的乐观态度抵消了爸爸的悲观情绪影响。
天平不总是处于平衡状态，有时，它会来回摇摆。所以，法语动词 balancer 就有了“摆动，摇动”（swing，rock）的意思。

L’enfant était assis et balançait les jambes.
The child sat swinging his legs.
小孩子坐着，腿来回摆动着。
Le bateau était balancé par les vagues.
The boat was rocked by the waves.
船在浪中颠簸着。
Si tu balances le berceau quelques minutes, elle s’endormira.

在口语中，balancer 还可以是“扔，赶出去，开除”等, 常翻译为英语的 chuck。

The manager of the factory gave him the boot /the push.
厂长把他给开除了。
Il a été balancé de l’école (du café).

在口语中 balancer 还有“辞职，告发”等意思。其实，仔细想想，这些意思也都是从“抛弃，扔掉”来的吧？
