in so many words 与 话不投机半句多

如果你对某人说话的方式是“in so many words” ，是什么意思呢？说了很多单词？意思就是为了准确、精确、直白地表达意思，让对方理解丝毫不差而说得很充分的意思。英文的解释就是 In those precise words; also, plainly, directly, exactly, explicitly, candidly, straightfowardly; in an outspoken way.

"That the Lord Mayor had threatened in so many words to pull down the London Bridge." 这是狄金斯戏剧里的一句台词。

先说 on speaking terms with someone, 英文的解释就是 on friendly terms with someone,   though perhaps in a superficial or guarded capacity; ready and willing to communicate.  直译过来就是泛泛之交，比点头之交大概好一点吧，还是能聊上几句天儿，但是关系很浅，还是有所防备的，连一般朋友都算不上。最差最差关系值也没到负值的区间吧。

We're on speaking terms, but I wouldn't say we're friends.

而这个 on speaking terms with someone, 其实在英文里最常见还是用于否定，也就是前述的 not on speaking terms with someone. 连泛泛之交都算不上了，无法交流，这时候关系值上就得加上负号了。因此在这个常用的习语层面，和话不投机半句多是可以互译的，用法和内涵意思都差不多了。英文的解释就是 To be alienated or estranged.

当你谈论与朋友疏远，因矛盾与同事老板不说话，以及与老婆、男女朋友、父母等等因为某些事情而进入“冷战”阶段时，也可以用 not on speaking terms with 来说。
