Once More to the Lake by Elwyn Brooks White

作者简介: Elwyn Brooks White, 1899—1985, American essayist, author, and literary stylist, whose eloquent, unaffected prose appealed to readers of all ages. He worked as a reporter and freelance writer before joining The New Yorker magazine as a writer and contributing editor in 1927. White’s essays for The New Yorker quickly garnered critical praise. Written in a personal, direct style that showcased an affable sense of humour, his witty pieces contained musings about city life, politics, and literature, among other subjects.

Notable Works:“Charlotte’s Web” “Harper’s Magazine” “Is Sex Necessary?”

Recounting a visit he takes with his son in Maine, White recalls how so many of the details he now experiences with his son are the same as those he experienced with his father a generation ago. In effect, his mindset transforms to go back to his childhood. Later, White suggests that in particular, the combination of summertime, lake cabins, and family get-togethers describes Americans at play and this represents much that is good, peaceful, and joyful in our lives. In the end, when he saw his son dash into the rain for a swim, he felt the chill of death......

    (1)revisit old haunts,

(2)湖水永远保持placidity, felt thin and clear and unsubstantial, 水中有着游动的bass。 There are days when return into the grooves which lead back, 时间好像没有流逝,这种感觉is cropping up. 一切都沉溺于安静,但a lull in everything that had made life tick.

▶I felt the same damp moss covering the worms in the bait can, and saw the dragonfly alight on the tip of my rod as it hovered a few inches from the surface of the water.

▶Summertime, oh summertime, pattern of life indelible, the fade-proof lake, the woods unshatterable, the pasture with the sweetfern and the juniper forever and ever, summer without end.

“The lake was exactly where we had left it, the same number of inches from the dock, and there was only the merest suggestion of a breeze.”

“The only thing that was wrong now, really, was the sound of the place, an unfamiliar nervous sound of the outboard motors.”

“I began to sustain the illusion that he was I, and therefore, by simple transposition, that I was my father.”

“As he buckled the swollen belt suddenly my groin felt the chill of death.”
