Model of different atoms controlled by light of a matching color. The realization of global quantum networks requires efficient interactions between light and matter. Ulanowski et al. use a Fabry-Perot resonator with a thin crystalline membrane to preserve stable optical transitions of erbium dopants. They coherently controlled more than 100 qubits in the same resonator using ultra-dense wavelength-division multiplexing.

Emission ratios in Arabidopsis root tips visualized with a genetically encoded fluorescent biosensor. The uptake and distribution of nitrate—a major nitrogen source and one of the most limiting factors in agricultural production—is critical to plant life. Visualizing this distribution at the cellular level provides an understanding of the fundamental aspects of nitrate uptake by plant roots. To do this, Chen et al. developed NitraMeter3.0, a genetically encoded fluorescent biosensor. The tool tracks both nitrate concentrations in real time and spatiotemporal changes during the plant life cycle.

Orb-weaver spider rests at the center of its dew-covered web. With transcriptome assemblies from over 1,000 species of spiders, Arakawa et al. cataloged silk gene sequences to measure the mechanical, thermal, structural, and hydration properties of the dragline silks of 446 species. Their study identified the design elements responsible for the extraordinary mechanical and physical performances of these silks and can provide models for sustainable biomaterial design.

A proposed “roll-to-roll” method of lithium recycling. The abundance of used batteries containing lithium offers a key source of the metal for sustainable battery production. However, recycling lithium often causes degradation of quality. Xu et al. propose a sustainable lithium recovery strategy for spent batteries. The system relies on electrical current driven diffusion to separate out usable lithium and can achieve repeated recycling without destroying the metal’s integrity. This method of lithium recycling has low energy consumption and could have high economic and environmental benefits.
