The need for improvements in printing speeds and materials is driving research and development in 3-D printing methods. Lipkowitz et al. demonstrate injection continuous liquid interface production (iCLIP), a 3D printing method that utilizes high-viscosity resins. The iCLIP method allows for the use of multiple resin types to print multi-material products at a rate up to 10 times faster than current 3D printing methods. Further development of iCLIP could improve practicality in additive manufacturing with applications in 4D printing, soft robotics, and smart product design.

A deep seabed mining vehicle releases sediment plumes nearly two miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. An experimental study investigated the dynamics of sediment plumes released by deep sea mining vehicles. Muñoz-Royo et al. examine the in-situ dynamics of the sediment plumes, which could have substantial implications on future plume modeling efforts and our understanding of their impact on the deep-sea environment.

Liang et al. identify a single nucleotide substitution in a gene that causes reduced flower coloration in a self-pollinated monkeyflower species. They find this mutation occurs in the mRNA rather than the elements that control gene transcription, leading to reduced protein translation. These results support the role of mutations affecting translation in natural phenotypic variation.

A diabetic woman runs while wearing a continuous glucose monitor. Pillon et al. determined the effects of exercise on genomic and immunometabolic signatures in people with normal glucose tolerance and in those with type 2 diabetes. Their findings suggest exercise triggers a more pronounced inflammatory response in people with type 2 diabetes. This work shows the potential for therapies targeting inflammation to improve the benefits of exercise in type 2 diabetics.

A. palmata’s reproductive genesis enabled Vasquez Kuntz et al. to study how somatic mutations (DNA alterations to non-germline cells after conception) transfer to offspring. They found that progeny harbor 50% of the 268 somatic mutations found in their parent. The authors suggest that somatic mutations may play a key role in adaptation to environmental changes over time.
