Chopsticks are traditional chinese utensils used for eating chinese food. Learning how to use chopsticks is the 1st step towards learning the chinese way of eating. If you go to China today, most of the eating house or restaurants will require you to use chopsticks for noodles or rice.
Singapore's Chinese eating habit have been slightly modified to suit the South East Asian culture. Most of the food center serves chinese food in the form of plate and you eat with fork and spoon, instead of bowl and chopsticks. Only noodles still exist using chopsticks and bowl.
If I eat at home, I would most likely use bowl and chopsticks, instead of plate/fork/spoon.
Just curious, do you use chopsticks when eating chinese food?

Generally, I try to.
Although I use a spoon to help with rice, and for soups.
And the other food must also conform to chopstick-friendly norms, such as being pre-cut into bite-sized pieces or be easy to pull apart.

Oh yeah, Chopsticks are generally geared towards eating things that have been cut into bite sized pieces. Its somewhat awkward to eat a slab of steak or Porkchop if they haven't been precut, but possible. I really don't mind using fork, and knife. Fork and knife are generally more elaborate utensils and are quite useful. But I find the decorations on some of the more expensive Chopsticks to be pretty cool.

I use chopsticks to eat Italian Pasta, Pizza, vege-German Burtwurst, vege hotdogs, Pad-Thai, falafels, salad, yogurt, fruit, and when i used to eat meat, fish, steak, Shawarma, you name it, i'd probably eaten it with chopsticks.

#7 Solid_Snake@#6
Wow, you must be the chopsticks god!!!! lol.
For me, it's no longer about trying or not trying. But it's already a habit I can't get rid of.
But still, try do imagine eating pizza with chopsticks. lol

@#6

#8 naruwan@#7
did i forget to mention cake?
but, the best part about chopsticks is that it is adaptable. It certainly can't do everything, there are times you need spoon, or knife to go with the chopsticks, but I think chopsticks replaces the fork very easily.
besides.... i like my bamboo or wood made chopsticks becuase i don't like the taste or the feeling a metal fork gives me when I eat.

@#7

Using chopsticks to eat chicken wings elegantly is one skill that I have yet to master!

#10 General_Zhaoyun@#9
I'm considered a master in the art of using chopsticks. Using chopsticks to eat chicken wings or legs is considered easy for me. I can easily eat chicken wings using chopsticks without the need to use my hands.
Have you guys tried eating prawns (those still having their skins/shells) using the chopsticks? I can easily eat prawns using the chopsticks and with the help of my teeth, which peeled off the skin/shell of the prawn.
I consider eating crabs using chopsticks the most challenging. I've yet to master it until one day I master the art of cutting the crab shell using my razor-like teeth

@#9

#11 naruwan@#10
woah~ you beat me. de-shell prawns with just teeth and chopsticks?? i can only do it if the prawns is already halved.
but most shrimps that I have here in Taiwan are smaller than the jumbo prawns in the US. Those are even more difficult to eat when it's not halved.
so GZ, it is now your responsibility to make a youtube video about how to do this with just chopsticks and show the rest of the world the error of their ways!
imagine now if someone can eat crabs with just chopsticks and no hands.......... that'd be level up.

@#10

No offense, but the only type of chop sticks I cannot use properly is made from Korea, those metal ones. These are slim, and heave since they are made of metal (or is it stainless steel)? After using it a while, I find my fingers very tired...

#13 General_Zhaoyun@#11
Lol.. sure I'll use my handphone to make a video of me eating prawn

@#11

#14 caocao74 @#12
After 3 years in Korea I have to agree.

@#12

#15 naruwan@#14
and it adds that metal taste in my mouth >_<

@#14

#16 caocao74@#15
What were you doing with these chopsticks?????

#20 Solid_Snake
Hmm.... Metal Chopsticks? Never heard of it..
But I did use a lot of something completely opposite, those very cheap and fragile wood chopsticks, you know the ones you have to split to use, in some very unhygienic local chinese food market in china.
But the food was delicious.

#21 General_Zhaoyun@#20
Metal Chopsticks were used mainly by koreans. It's rather heavy. Koreans also eat rice using metal bowls. I heard they use metal bowl in order to make sure the rice remains warm (when covered under blankets) during cold weather

#22 naruwan@#20
if you live in the US coastal cities goto a Korean Tofu Pot place and you will see metal chopsticks

#23 Moon
Actually after using the metal chopsticks for a while, the fingers become tired not because of its weight, but more because of the slimness of the chopsticks. Probably I am not used to these chopsticks so I use a great amount of effort with my fingers to try to grip it in place in order to pick up the food properly..

#24 Centaur
Chinese food or not, I prefer to use the chopsticks. I guess I am comfortable using it... umm, I forgot I did have some rather nice chopsticks from Shanghai - time to use them.

#25 Publius
When eating western food, I use western eating utensils. When eating Indian food and some Arabic food, I use my fingers. When eating Chinese food, I use chopsticks. When in Rome, do as the Romans do...
I prefer wooden chopsticks that aren't too slender-plastic, jade, and metal ones seem less-elegant to me.

#26 yongzheng freak
Honestly, I suck at using chopsticks - I hold them the wrong way but, hey, i still can pick food up with them....whether i use them depends on where i am eating. If i am at a chinese restaurant or a place that serves chinese food in a bowl, I'll use them if not...it will be fork and spoon. When i am at home, then its fork and spoon or simply hands.....unless i am in the mood for chopsticks....

#27 bayonet
I don t know why, but, I find myself more adapt to use chopsticks to eat western food, like pork, beefsteak, pizza etc. I can use the chopstick to slice the meal to one bite size in an elegant way. But when i use the folk and knife, mostly, i can not use them efficiently and end up with the chopsticks to help.

#28 DaMo
Chopsticks for pizza? Maybe for those pizzas that are served already cut into bite-sized squares.

@#29naruwan@#28
with soft crust, you pick it up with the chopstick and take a bite out of it....
with think crust it is a little harder to eat with chopsticks.

#30 Kimchee
Chinese food (Korean, Thai and Japanese food for that matter) tastes better with chop sticks! Anyway, that's how I feel... even a Cup O' Noodles at home... hey! I suddenly feel like this is Deja Vue! Did I post this somewhere else?

#31 Liu Xiao Mei
Almost always when eating Asian food, salads and Indian food. I also usually use them to fry, cook or blend foods as well. They're easy to clean, attractive and can easily be slipped into a purse to take to work!

Chopsticks all the way. Although I dislike the silver chopsticks used in Korean restaurants.
In my home I only have one fork, seldom ever used.

#37 Sephodwyrm
I hardly use forks either.
I do use spoons.
I can't understand why people use fork t eat rice...

#38 Yan Xishan@#37
They might be eating that Uncle Ben's crapola, non-sticky.

#39 Sephodwyrm@#38
Right, but putting sharp things in my mouth?
I would rather use a spoon.
