According to marriage-license data from across the United States analyzed by Unchained, some 248,000 children at least as young as 12 years old were married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2010. An overwhelming majority of them were females.

So, one can join the military at 17 with parental consent and go off to war, but, cannot get married. I joined the Marines at 17. They thought I was mature enough to go fight in a war at that age, and that legal age to join the military still exists. I guess you can be old enough to lay down your life for your country, but, not old enough to get married. Strange world we live in!

Forcing young people to not get married is just as bad as forcing them to get married. The problem here is the "Force" part. There is no physical reason to restrict them. Just because some "Adults" think that''s what is best for them doesn''t mean it really is.

I had joined the U.S. Navy right out of high school and had been away a full year and it was going to be another year before I saw her again due to a new assignment, so we got married and she came with me. This law would have prevented me and my wife of 34 years from getting married, so I am against it, just because it''s not something you would do doesn''t mean it is wrong.

Some of these situations are no doubt exploitive, but the vast majority are probably 19 year olds, married to 17 year olds, or something similar.

Kids under 18 aren''t mature enough to vote but they can get married in most states. Wake up America! We are failing to protect our children. Other modern countries offer paternity leave, public healthcare, public education below grade K (childcare) and above grade 12.... We do not offer these comforts to our citizens. In the USA 2 adults each working forty hours a week for minimum wage can not support a family. This is unheard of in other modern countries. Plus our citizens worry about going bankrupt if a family member becomes ill. We do not want to do away with public schools, fire and police departments, libraries, roads etc. juc st because they represent democratic socialism. We are very glad these things were put into place even though they aren’t perfect. It was smart to do so. It is past time for our generation to put things in place. All the other modern, progressive countries are not wrong for adding public healthcare. Public education isn’t perfect. Public healthcare won’t be perfect either but we won’t want to do away with it. We have children going to sleep tonight with no access to an antibiotic because their parents can’t afford to feed them and buy them an antibiotic. When it makes sense to add necessities, we add them. Citizens in the past had no problem adding libraries, kindergarten, expanding public education from grades 1-6 to grades k -12. They did what made sense in order to keep up with the modern world. It’s way past time to add public healthcare that is the same for everyone. Universal healthcare needs to be appropriate for the people in government as well as all citizens because no one is less than or superior. Healthcare is a right. It is time that we, like other countries, offer above grade 12, below grade k childcare and paternity leave. It is time for two parents working forty hours a week making minimum wage to be able to support a family. What are we waiting for? It’s time to support our children by providing for them as they would be provided for if they resided in other modern countries. Why should they sit in school with no hearing aids or eye glasses and return home to parents stressing over illness because they can’t afford healthcare? This wouldn’t happen to them if they lived in other modern countries. Why should we pay ten times what others pay for the same medication? Why should we have our food prepared by ill citizens who can’t afford healthcare? Providing no preventative care costs all of us in the long run. We already spend twice as much on healthcare as other modern countries. It’s time to shout these inequalities from the rooftop in order to protect our kids. It is time to recognize that 1% of our population owns as much as 99%. It is time to recognize that there are 40 million people living in poverty in the USA. It isn’t time to be wishy washy moderates, afraid to rock the boat.

So just to be clear a law that would by its very nature create MORE unwed mothers is somehow a good thing? And let''s not forget that you can still choose to have a pregnancy terminated at under 18 but you CAN''T choose to get married? This seems to be more of a law based on emotion rather than logic...

Pennsylvania has a large Amish population. I personally don’t think 16-17 yr olds should get married, but I’d bet 99.98% of these “child marriages” are within the Amish communities. That said, is there really a defining difference between a 17 yr old and an 18yr old?

Well, it is due to life expectancy increasing as much as it has in the last 100 years.
It was not uncommon for people to die in their 40s before WW2, so people got married young.
Time has passed and most people in the US, at least, live til around 80.
It is just one of those things that they never got around to changing in many places, but it is only a few small segments of society (mormons, amish, islamics) that do most of the child marriage these days.

My grandparents were married at age 16 and it was fine. My grandfather skipped second grade and then did high school in 3 instead of 4 years and was a high school graduate at age 16 with a good work ethic and was perfectly capable of supporting a wife and kids. Back in 1936 there was nothing wrong with this and there should be nothing wrong with it now. A 16YO is not a "child." A 16YO is able to consent to sex in most states, why not marriage?
