Lecture 9: Membrane Transport and Water Potential
1. Explain why differing solute concentrations on either side of a membrane are balanced by water movement rather than by solute movement.
2. Which types of transporter proteins are enzymes? What is the substrate for transporter proteins that are enzymes?
3. What would happen to a plant cell in a normal, everyday plant if it were placed in ocean water? Would this cell become turgid, flaccid, or plasmolyzed? Why?
4. Why do open stomata pose a problem for plants? What are the benefits of open stomata?
5. What kinds of transmembrane transport (e.g. facilitated diffusion, primary active transport, etc.) occur across guard cell plasma membranes during the process of stomatal opening? What kinds of membrane proteins are involved, and which use ATP?
6. Think about two adjacent plant cells (call them cell A and cell B). In cell A, the solute potential is -0.4 MPa and in cell B, the solute potential is -0.6 MPa. Is cell A hypotonic or hypertonic compared to cell B? Which way will water flow? What if the pressure potential in cell A was 0.2 MPa, and the pressure potential in cell B was 0.5 MPa (assume both cells have the same solute potential as in the first part of the question)? Which way will water flow in that case?
7. How is ATP synthase similar to the K+ channel in guard cell membranes? 8. Why is aquaporin necessary if water can cross biological membranes?
