第七节 形容词名词化

在英语中，经常会使用形容词的名词形式，如把形容词“available”转换成名词

“availability”。这种形容词名词化现象在阅读中也会经常碰到，也能够理解，但

在翻译、写作 及口语练习中想不到这样使用，因此我们在阅读中要关注这种现象，

并不断积累，久而久之， 就会有意识地使用这种用法。

1. Charlie Hill had more or less taken responsibility for the neighbor and her two children.

查理.希尔或多或少对这位邻居及她的两个孩子负有责任。

形容词“responsible”转变成名词“responsibility”。

2. It was no great distance, in those days, from the prison-door to the market place.

在那个时代，从监狱大门到市场不是很远。

形容词“distant”转变成名词“distance”。

3. By the time he was a month old, the necessity of giving him a name became apparent.

当他一个月大的时候，很明显给他取个名字是必要的。

形容词“necessary”转换成名词“necessity”。

4. On the other hand, reading for information was a daily necessity.

另一方面，每天必须读书获取信息。

5. It is no accident that the two most important public intellectuals in America—
