The presence of Kroot mercenaries in the Expanse is something of a mystery. Imperial xenosbiologists and members of the Ordo Xenos believe the race originated on the other side of the galaxy. Encounters with Kroot are much more frequent in the Expanse than in Calixis, but this does little to clarify the mystery.

Most Kroot warbands bands travel with their employers(usually in isolated compartments given their eating habits),but they do have a unique spaceship of their own. Its shape and nature gave it the obvious name - Warsphere.These massive ships,housing entire Kroot civilisations, travel between stars using secretive warp travel methods. They migrate across the Expanses mostly avoiding other races, supporting their mercenary operations as well as their growing network of colonies, and carrying the choicest rewards of mercenary service. When needed they go to war with them as well.

There are plenty of questions about how the Kroot gained access to technology allowing them to construct interstellar ships. Legends amongst Koronus void travellers tell that long ago an alien-possibly Ork-voidship crashed on a Kroot planet,and the natives created their own ship from the remains. Not knowing what shape to make it, and favouring natural designs above the ramshackle metal contortions they found, they chose the most sturdy and safe enclosure they knew-an egg. Other more practical traders believe the Kroot simply bought the technology from parties unknown, and perhaps are still paying for it given their highly mercenary ways. Their services are not cheap, but they are loyal and are excellent fighters. Hiring a Warsphere is hugely expensive, but having such a huge ship in a fleet is a sure way to intimidate any enemy.

Warspheres are exceptionally tough and able to withstand enormous punishment in battle. Their hulls are formed ofhuge cylindrical interlocking plates, which seem able to be positioned in different configurations depending on factors such as threat status or desired velocity, often opened to reveal interior constructions of unknown purpose. Traders have reported different sizes (though all quite large). Indeed, as some Warspheres seem to have grown in size over the decades many believe that all start as smaller and grow in size as their Kindredcrew grow in wealth and power, adding additional structures and armaments as they enlarge. Tales even speak of sizes approaching that of small moons, but surely those must be apocryphal.

The Warsphere is a gigantic structure—easily the length of a battleship: each encompasses a volume greater than many spacestations. Their axial plasma drive alone is larger than many warships, blazing with the might of several suns to move the massive bulk through space. While slow and ponderous, extensive and powerful manoeuvring thrusters allow them to change facing more easily than most voidships.

 Despite the name, Warspheres are more than warships.Each is the home for many Kindred families,each long separated from their distant home system and not wishing to see their new one destroyed. When they do need to fight though, they are dangerous opponents.Each ship is covered with macrobatteries and can launch numerous assault ships loaded with ferce Carnivore squads. Boarding or ramming a Warsphere is unadvisable due to the sheer numbers of the furious defenders as well.Larger ones often carry many valuables though and are sometimes the target of massed pirate fleets.

Unlike many voidships of comparable size, Warspheres are capable of planetary landing, an especally useful ability to aid in repairsor escape an enemy. This is truly a fearsome sight as the enormous mass slowly eclipses the local sun as it rides the great fusion flames to the ground.The powerful drive engines tear apart mountains of earth as it settles, with the numerous thrusters blasting the terrain as to cocoon the vessel. Once dirtside, the ship acts as a local base of operations and often helps establish a new Kroot colony. When ready,they lift off back into the void, literally an earth-shaking event that those left behind will speak of for generations to come.

Kroot Warspheres are an uncommonsight in the Expanse, but there are several that travel through the space lanes.Warspheres are dangerous opponents,simply because they are incredibly tough and havea large number of guns. However, due to the Kroot's mercenary nature, dealing with one may be easier (and more profitable) than fighting it. Likewise, the Kroot do not often hire themselves to take on space born foes,prefering planetary invasions or boarding actions where their talents are not wasted.

In addition to the four capital ships, the fleet had lost fourteen escorts, with another two almost certainly damaged beyond the fleet's capacity to repair them in space. The battle had been a victory, Jellaqua had announced, but it was obvious the Imperium could scarcely afford another such win.

Unlike the Oathbreakers, the Coldfire Kindred makes extensive use of hi-tech weaponry, often going to battle in scavenged bits of armour and wielding the pulse weapons of their Tau allies. While the Kroot are known to adapt and use the technology of other races, particularly weaponry, the Coldfire Kindred has a genuine affinity for advanced technology. Other Kroot look on the Coldfire Kindred as somewhat eccentric and perverse, putting too much reliance on technology, but the Kindred pays them little heed. Though not a particularly large or numerous Kindred, the Coldfire Kindred has earned a reputation in the Periphery as reliable and effective mercenaries, willing to work for anyone willing to meet their price. They have been known to hire themselves out as mercenaries in exchange for bits of archeotech and Dark Age technology, and it is rumoured that their Warsphere, the Avar, is fitted with some of the most sophisticated and powerful weaponry in the sector—a rumour borne out by the reported destruction of an Imperial squadron led by the Dauntless-class cruiser Warspite, which attempted to interdict the Warsphere en route to Ohmsworld.

Farren felt the pressing weight of acceleration as the Thunderhawk Pride of Lions shot from the exterior of the kroot warsphere like an eagle soaring from a mountain peak into the open skies. When it was some distance away, its pilot, Autinocus, sent a tight-beam psalm of activation to the munitions he had sown within the warsphere’s core.

Tapping an appeasement rune, Farren brought the warsphere into focus on the faded disposition data-slate within the transport hold. It began to fall in on itself, then come apart in a stately collapse that left it no more than a field of void-claimed debris.

While relatively slow and ungainly,  the Warspheres are sturdy and reliable, and unlike Tau vessels,  they are capable of long-distance Warp travel. How the Kroot  manage to safely navigate the dangerous ebbs and tides of  the Empyrean without the benefit of Navigators is a mystery.

I have further noted in various writings the attitudes of the Kroot towards technology. They are not great  innovators, but despite this display an innate, instinctual affinity towards certain forms of technology, generally  those with a military application. This must surely have been inherited from the Orks, perhaps by way of the  Kroot eating a number of the Orkoid “Mek” class and acquiring something of the greenskins’ almost genetic  understanding of machinery. I have noted some Kroot warriors discarding acquired weapons that have become  unserviceable through simple lack of maintenance, but never those of their own manufacture. It appears that  their affinity with their own weapons is instinctual, and does not extend to items constructed by others.

There is no shortage of mercenary bands available in the Expanse, but those of the Kroot are considered particularly preferable, due to their loyalty to employers and ferocity in battle.

Though  they show little preference or loyalty to one side or another  in the conflicts raging on the Spinward Front, the Kroot  are generally scrupulously honest in their dealings, abiding  by the terms of their agreements to the letter.

While the Kroot are seemingly inseparable from their mercenary ways, there is a single thing that can trump any payment or deal—their loyalty to the Tau. Although the Kroot are spread throughout the galaxy, all feel a deep connection to their home world of Pech. Since Pech swore allegiance to the Tau Empire, all Kroot have respected this arrangement. No Kroot knowingly enter battle against their saviours and benefactors, the Tau, and this fact can work to the Explorers’ advantage. Unsurprisingly, the Kroot do not expect to see Tau aboard a human vessel, nor do they have reason to believe any Tau are present in the Koronus Expanse. However, should the kindred become aware that the Explorers have an alliance with the Tau Cadre, and that its members are aboard their vessel, they immediately abort their attack.

Because of  the chaotic nature of the struggle in the sub-sector, Kroot  Kindreds occasionally even find themselves fighting each  other. Though Kroot on the battlefield show no restraint in  killing (and eating) their own kind, such encounters don’t  seem to engender any lasting resentment, and former enemies  will readily fight beside each other once their commitments  end and new alliances are formed.
