Over the last couple of years local pop star Leslie Cheung has been riding high. At just 28 years of age, he has made a significant impact on the local pop scene and is now a respected actor too. This month sees Leslie very much in the limelight as he is giving a series of 10 sell-out concerts at the Coliseum. Here ‘Lifestyle’ asks Leslie about his career and his ambitions.

Lifestyle: Have you always wanted to be a singer?
Leslie: Actually it’s rather strange how it all came about. I spent my teens in England studying for my O- and A-levels and then went on to Leeds University to study textiles. This was in 1976. Then unfortunately after just one year my father became paralyzed and so I had to come back to Hong Kong. I spent the summer selling jeans in a shop but then in the summer of 1977 I entered the Asian Amateurs Singing Contest in which I came second. So that landed me into my singing career.
Lifestyle: How did you develop your interest in singing?
Leslie: Well I have always loved to sing since I was a child. So after the singing contest I was contracted by RTV for three years although at the time it was lousy pay, just one thousand a month! Now I’m acting for TV as well as for movies but I always prefer to play the romantic roles.

Lifestyle: But your real success has been fairly recent hasn’t it?
Leslie: Well, since 1983 I have been doing a lot of things. I quit RTV in 1981 and then went freelance and signed a contract with TVB. That’s when I joined Capital Artists as well, I do all my recording with them.
Lifestyle: How in fact did your acting career come about?
Leslie: At the time I was with RTV I did not have many opportunities to sing because they were not too good in the musical field. So I got involved with dramas, it was a case of doing that or nothing.
Lifestyle: You perform not only locally but regionally too.
Leslie: Yes that’s true, I perform concerts in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Now I’m heading for Japan because I really want to break into the Japanese market.

Leslife: Actually my first album was entirely in English but I was only copying other hit songs of English and American artists. The point is, however, that most people here are Chinese and they want to hear Chinese songs. They do not pay much attention to Chinese who sing in English. Often an English song will be sung by a local artist in Cantonese and I often do that myself. For example I am singing Rod Stewart’s ‘Sailing’ as a finale to my concerts.
Lifestyle: Is Chinese a difficult language in which to sing?
Leslie: English is a much more flexible language to sing in. in Cantonese you have to really hit every word in the right tone. In fact direct copies of many of the English songs can sound very awkward in Cantonese because most Chinese singers cannot sing in the English style. I think that there are only two Chinese guys who can sing English songs in Hong Kong, one is George Lam and the other is me.

Lifestyle: And your most successful songs must be original Cantonese ones?
Leslie: It’s funny because many of the songs that reach the top of the charts are Japanese songs which have been translated into Cantonese. For example, ‘Monica’ which reached the top of the Chinese charts last year was in fact a Japanese song but new lyrics were invented to fit in with the tune. We have a very strong link with Japanese recording companies so we can have the songs right away. But there is a lot of original work in Hong Kong. I personally prefer those composers who compose ballads rather than those who do the fast numbers. There must be something wrong with the arrangements because the fast numbers are no good.
Lifestyle: While you are performing so many concerts in Hong Kong, do you not find it all very exhausting?
Leslie: Well it depends because I really enjoy them and I love being on stage. After the concerts I’m heading for Hawaii and Japan on holiday so I shall be getting a rest.
Lifestyle: So when is your next album due?
Leslie: Well actually I’ve just released one this August, it contains remixed versions of my greatest hits. I release just one or two albums a year, the maximum is two.

Lifestyle: And films?
Leslie: I do about two a year but I don’t do any more dramas for television because it’s too tough. Films are easy, you only spent eight hours a day on them so it’s very relaxing. But with TV series it’s non-stop so count me out! Actually you have to be careful about over-exposure on the local scene. It is a mistake to over-do things so now I want to keep a fairly low profile in Hong Kong.

Lifestyle: Is it difficult being in the public eye all the time?
Leslie: When I’m shopping I tend to focus on one point and do not look at anybody straight in the face. That’s why I do a lot of window shopping whenever I walk down a street!
Lifestyle: So what do you like to do in your leisure time?
Leslie: I love sailing and boating. Travelling I am also fond of but I particularly like Europe, it’s more romantic. At home I listen to music because I don’t like television. In particular I like Chinese opera and classical music but I like some popular music too. I also do some home cooking, mainly Chinese of course, but I can cook shepherd’s pie!
Lifestyle: And how about family life?
Leslie: My family are all over the place. I have nine brothers and sisters some of whom are in Canada, some are in the States. I am the baby of the family. My elder sister, Ophelia, has also done well locally. She was the former director of the Consumer Council and is now working as a buyer for a large company here. We all keep in close touch except with my father. He has vanished.

Lifestyle: What about the future?
Leslie: Well after my holiday I shall be going to Europe to do some concerts in London, Amsterdam and Paris. That’s just for the local Chinese communities over there. Then I shall be doing a movie during the autumn. It’s going to be a love story based in Europe so I will not be back in Hong Kong until Christmas. But that’s okay because I hate hot weather!
Lifestyle: Well good luck with that and many thanks, Leslie.
