Cattails grow everywhere in the Upper Midwest, not just in marshes or at the edges of lakes but in suburban ponds and ditches beside freeway exits. They’re the waypoints along Big Thief’s “Cattails,” a spiritual travelogue with a comforting, folksy thrum and a Neil Young twang in its fingerpicked guitar lines. The second single from the band’s forthcoming album U.F.O.F. celebrates thresholds between civilization and nature, whether the landscape view from a train window or the motel so remote that you might see a meteor shower over the parking lot. But Adrianne Lenker’s most arresting vision is of what awaits at her destination: an elderly woman sunbathing, in the “middle of the river in a lawn chair,” she sings. Seated in the current, she too awaits the return to nature with cattails all around.
