名词化的从句
1 名词性从句的名词化
他们要走，这是显而易见的。
That they will leave is quite obvious. （That they will leave）
Their departure is quite obvious. （Their departure）
他们何时抵达市里还没有公开。
When they will arrive at the city hasn’t been made public. （When they will arrive at the city）
The time of their arrival at the city hasn’t been made public. （The time of their arrival）
2 状语从句的名词化
状语从句转化为名词短语，用介词替代状语从句的连接副词，构成介词短语作状语。
如果你帮助他，他就可能按时完成任务。
If you had helped him, he could have finished the task on time. （条件状语从句If you had helped him）
With your help, he could have finished the task on time. （介词短语With your help）
工人们反对老板，因为他很残酷。
The workers opposed the boss because he was cruel. （原因状语从句because he was cruel）
The workers opposed the boss because of his cruelty. （介词短语because of his cruelty）
被动结构的名词化
他最终被这所大学录取了。
He was admitted to the university finally. （He was admitted）
He gained admission to the university finally. （He was admitted）
名词的句法功能
可以作主语、宾语、标语、定语、补足语、同位语、独立成分、状语
1 作主语
These ideas may seem strange to you. 这些想法你也许会觉得奇怪。（These ideas）
A strange feeling of deep gloom came down on me. 一种阴郁至极的怪异感觉降临在我身上。（A strange feeling of deep gloom）
2 作宾语
We’ve got loads of homework tonight. 今晚我们有许多家庭作业要做。（loads of homework tonight）
They have been working from morning to night. 他们从早到晚一直在工作。（morning to night，此处是介词from的宾语，加上from就是句子的状语）
3 作表语
The affair remained a complete mystery. 这件事还完全是个谜。（a complete mystery）
Complacency is the enemy of study. 学习最大的敌人是满足。（the enemy of study）
4 作定语
名词所有格

of + 名词短语
size of the room 房间的大小
双重所有格
I met a friend of my father’s. 我遇见了我爸爸的朋友。
He is a classmate of mine. 他是我同学。
名词原型作定语

5 作补语
They elected him president of the university. 他们选他为该大学的校长。（president）
6 作同位语

7 作独立成分
