Shou Zi Chew (Economics BSc 2006) is the Chief Executive Officer of TikTok, where, in partnership with the company’s management team, he is responsible for driving global growth and leading corporate governance.

Hi everyone, my name is Shou, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to speak with you today. This is a very special moment for you and your entire family. I still vividly remember sitting in your seat 16 years ago as a graduate of the economics department. I wanted to take a few moments today to share a few things I've learned on my own journey. 

大家好，我是周受资，很荣幸今天有机会和大家进行交谈。这对你和你的整个家庭来说都是非常特别的时刻。我仍然清晰地记得16年前坐在你现在的座位上，作为经济系的毕业生。今天，我想花一些时间来分享一下我的人生旅途中的经历和所学到的一些事情。

Growing up in Singapore, a small island state, I knew that I wanted to see as much of the world as possible. Being at UCL and living in London gave me a diverse and international experience. Like many of you, I made some amazing lifelong friends from around the world during my time at UCL. 

我成长于新加坡这个小岛国家，我知道我想尽可能多地看到这个世界。在UCL学习和在伦敦生活让我获得了多元化和国际化的体验。和你们许多人一样，在UCL的时光里，我结交了来自世界各地的毕生挚友。

After graduation, I didn't really know what I wanted to do or where life would take me. In hindsight, there was no big plan. I worked hard with what I had, I put myself out there, and I took chances when it came. 

毕业后，我并不真的知道自己想要做什么也不知道生活会带给去向何方。回想起来，当时并没有什么大计划。我只能很努力的工作，利用我所拥有的一切，展示自己的能力，当机会来时紧紧抓住。

My first job out of college was to join Goldman Sachs, an investment bank in London. There I was introduced to DST, a young investment firm that only just started. I didn't really have any investing experience then, but I kept trying to learn and push myself to leave my comfort zone. I met many internet founders during this journey, including the founding team of ByteDance and TikTok, and many years later I find myself taking my current role at TikTok. 

我大学毕业后的第一份工作是加入伦敦的投资银行高盛。在那里，我被介绍到DST，一个刚起步很年轻的投资公司。当时，我当时并没有任何的投资经验，但我一直在努力学习并迫使自己走出舒适区。在这个旅程中，我遇到了许多互联网创始人，包括字节跳动和TikTok的创始团队，多年后我发现自己在TikTok担任了现在的角色。

Somewhere in the middle of this journey,I chose to go to business school in the US.I remember struggling with this decision, wondering if this decision would enhance or delay my career.I'm glad that I did choose to go despite my own uncertainties, as it was there that I met my wife.

在这段旅程的中途，我选择去了美国读商学院。我记得当时对这个决定很纠结，不确定这个决定是否会促进还是延缓我的职业生涯。我很高兴我做出了这个选择尽管我还不确定，因为就是在那里，我遇见了我的妻子。

I would have no way to prove if my career would have been better if I had taken another path, but I can confidently say that my life is fuller and more meaningful as a result of my decision. 

我无法证明如果我走了另一条路，我的职业生涯会更好，但我可以自信地说，我的生活因我的决定变得更充实、更有意义。

The point I'm trying to make is to encourage you to embrace the journey you are going to embark on. Life will take you in many directions, work hard to make the most of what you have. Take chances that will come your way but don't overthink it. 

我想说的是，鼓励大家拥抱即将开始的旅程。生活会引领你走向很多个方向，要努力发挥你所拥有的资源，抓住机遇，但不要过度思考。

Sometimes you will have to leave your comfort zone and you will feel uncertain and uncomfortable, that is okay. In my case, those were the times I found myself learning and developing the most. The world is changing quickly, and there are always new situations that you're not going to be familiar with.

有时你不得不离开你的舒适区，你会感到不确定和不舒服，这没关系。就我而言，那些时候是我发现自己学习和提升最多的时候。世界瞬息万变，总有一些你不熟悉的新情况。

No matter what you encounter, have confidence that the skills and knowledge you've acquired will carry you through, and know that your professors will be cheering you on and your friends and family will be supporting you along the way.

无论遇到什么情况，要有信心你所掌握的技能和知识会帮你度过难关，要知道你的教授会为你们加油，你的朋友和家人会一直支持你。
