3. Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs)

  • THe National Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) System provide tie-critical flight planning information not available in the most recent aeronautical charts or the A/FD

  • Types of NOTAMs:

    • NOTAM(D): Contains changes associated with enroute navigational aids, civil public-use airports and facilities, and the services and procedures at those locations. They are disseminated for all navigational facilities that are part of the U/S airspace system and all facilities listed in the A/FD

    • FDC NOTAMs: Contains regulatory information such as temporary flight restrictions or amendments to instrument approach procedures and other current aeronautical charts

  • The Notices to Airmen Publication (NTAP), issued every 28 days, contains all current NOTAM(D)s and FDC NOTAMs) except those for temporary flight restrictions)

  • In addition, FDC NOTAMs are available through all airtraffic facilities with telecommunications access

Federal Aviation regulations (FARs)
  • Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRMs), found in the Federal Register, inform pilots of pending regulation changes, allowing time to comment on the proposal and present ideas that might influence the final rule

  • In government documents, a regulation is referred to by the CFR subject title number, such as 14 CFR Section 91.3; this same regulation is referred to as FAR 91.3 within the aviation community
