7. Matte Painting Techniques---1-2.The Basics

P69 - 00:00 

 So let’s talk about heighten basis. So as you remember, in the first lesson, We did this trick with painting those abstract pictures right now, we will take it to the next level using photoshop 3D.

And also afterwards we will use some photo bashing techniques. So let's start with a height map technique first.

So basically, what is height Map? A height map is a black and white image. For example. I can paint something black and white over here.

And what we will do make sure that you merge these guys. So you have it done on a separate layer.

And then we will go to 3D. And remember we never touched all the groups that. This one. So we did use postcards, but we never tried that depth map. This is where we will be using height map, which is in other words, called depth map. So we will use this option and we will see create.

And see what good it does for us. as you can see, it creates a depth map. Basically the black color is the lowest like, and white is the highest point of your map. 

P69 - 01:19白色是高点,黑色是低点的。 

So what we need to do, and you just rotate it like this. and it's done. now remember as we had it as an abstract texture, it was flat. But instead of having a flat texture, now we have a very nice surface that has some elevation to it. Because look, if I adjust shadow, we've got a very nice elevation.

So. That's pretty much it about height map generation. But what's powerful about it and especially powerful being inside photoshop,

because any time you can go back, you can select your depth map, double click edit source, open another file. So we will go and arrange the tiles vertically.

And now look, whenever I change was good. Let me invert it. Save it. And now i've got like a proper heal, like a set of heels or something like that. Take a look at. It's very cool, but also what is good about it. Like I can start painting,

for example, if I want to do a castle or something like that or the space for my castle, I can pick up the white this point. So it's going to be highest point in this map press CTRL s. 

P69 - 02:38在黑色至高点ctrl+S。 

You see If he arrived at this elevation. So you can use smudge tool on these, start building. It's like a building a top view of your stuff.

And you're getting some really nice results. Like these. And so on. And it gives you like very cool representation very useful because from here, like you can take this one. And if this was your castle right, because you are still in photoshop. You could have, as it is a good base. You can move things like shadows around. refining good spots.

And then you can start painting humans. You’ve got these really stuff going on. It’s just because we need to render it. Once you hit the render, it will disappear. So don't worry about that. that's pretty much it about height map generation. And the next example, I will show you a little bit different example.

7. Matte Painting Techniques---1-3.Bump Textures

P70 - 00:00 

So okay, i'll pick up this example from a previous chapter, and I will show you how to add a little bit of additional Information to this one. 

P70 - 00:08如何添加材质。 

So as you can see, the the surface is very lumpy, It's just there's no not enough polygons, 

P70 - 00:15波浪起伏的,没有多边形。 

which is not a big deal. But sometimes we just need a little bit more polished version of it. 

P70 - 00:21但有时候需要一点抛光的版本。 

So we will use texture and to enhance the look of it. So basically what I will do, I will go to bump over here and say generate bumps from diffuse.

But if you don't have this one, it means you have a photoshop CC lower than two 2015. It's not a big deal. Basically, you can you need to do you go to edit your diffuse texture, 

P70 - 00:43版本低,选漫射-编辑材质。 

and you copy this, you go to the bump map. New texture. 

P70 - 00:52物质-贴图-新建材质。 

And basically. what happened?  And you bump up your copy paste this image, And then you save it. 

P70 - 01:15复制粘贴-保存。 

Let's close these guys. So basically what it did like, I can barely see it now. But if I increase the amount of bump. Now you can see there is much more going on, It became more like details because we're having a bump map, which is very useful, Because like if you're doing sand or something like this, you need some kind of texture on top of it. 

P70 - 01:41百分百凹凸贴图,是表面材质。 

And you can start like if you go on edit your bump. Go to your bump and start like just painting randomly some stuff. Save it. 

P70 - 01:56贴图-材质-随机绘制。 

And you see you've got additional kind of level. So in the next chapter, I will show you how to use photos to enhance this look. But that's it for now, so with bump texture, which is giving it additional kind of level of detail. 

 

7. Matte Painting Techniques---1-4.Bit Depth

P71 - 00:00 

 So one thing that you already might have noticed that we are getting very kind of lower surface like this. 

P71 - 00:09你发现有些低的表面。 

And unfortunately, if you even operate your file size, you will still get some of this kind of rough surface. 

P71 - 00:21操控文件大小,找到粗糙平面。 

And basically which looks like very low poly and especially if you wanna do like it short closer to the ground, it just doesn't look right, but there is remedy for this one. 

P71 - 00:31低多边形看起来不对,补救办法。 

So basically remedy comes from up raising format of your files. So right now we are working in 8 bits per channel, which basically go higher. And also you get more pixel Information inside you gradient. So this is basically a wider range of pixels. 

P71 - 00:59图像-模式-8 16 32点。 

you would have if you have a 32 bit image. So we will create a 32 bit image.  And you will clearly see how much difference it makes. 

P71 - 01:11文件-分辨率32比特很大不同。 

So let’s go and paint this with black first, and then we will start creating something heels, with the white surface. 

P71 - 01:22绘制出黑色屏幕,涂满白色表面。 

Overall, you can already see there is much more detail in the gradient.  

P71 - 01:35你会发现梯度有很多细节。 

So for example, let's do this. And now we will go and do the same thing with our height map. 

P71 - 01:44比如给高图做同样的处理。 

So we will go to our height map that gets close to this guy and generate mesh from a depth map. 

P71 - 01:56有深度图层,做出网格实体。 

this is what we got. And look how much sharper it is like this. Like if I rotate like this. Resize my size like this. 

P71 - 02:11可以调整凸起的高度和大小。 

Look how much sharper is. There is no lumpy stuff. It's just very quickly and very good. And that’s a very good sign, because what we will do next, we will basically use this without the bump map and apply photo texture. 

P71 - 02:30不用凹凸贴图而用照片材质。 

And we will get a very decent ground level. That’s it for resolution. Make sure that you have a 32 bit mode to get a very good surface. 

P71 - 02:41表面32比特效果好。 

And after you made the surface, you probably can switch back to normal mode. 

P71 - 02:46可以调节到正常模式。 

So It's all about having a depth map with the proper bit Information.

And once again, you can always pick this up. Double click on this guy, added the source. To opening these file. 

P71 - 03:05创建资源-打开文件。 

as you can see over here, it says 32 bit. So now if you paint like spots and save it. Take some time to update it. Yet. Now you see it. It's over here. So very useful guys. Of all the lighting Information and stuff like that. It's just super cool. All right, guys. see the next chapter.

 

7. Matte Painting Techniques---1-5.Real Height Map Data

P72 - 00:00 

 So the next step for us could be we have it the depth map. And we have this photo real texture of it. But how about if we use for photo real high map as well. 

P72 - 00:19如何用照片真高清图? 

So you can find all of these height maps. All you need to do is just type in height map and you will get all these range of height maps. 

P72 - 00:32输入高度图,搜索到高度图。 

I would advice you to obviously sort them by size and pick the big ones. 

P72 - 00:38建议选择大点的高清图。 

We’ll show you how to use these. But you can pick up the ones that you really like. Try to using some of them are working very nice, some of them are not. Like this one is a good one probably.  

P72 - 00:55选择大小图像都满意的。 

So let's try this one and maybe this one as well. Copy, and we will go. Like these, and make sure that we swapped to a 32 bit. 

P72 - 01:19拷贝图层-选择成32比特。 

Now we will go and basically generate our 3D plane. Although this great scale, we’ll height map date. It takes a while. But the result is pretty good.  

P72 - 01:37生成3D,结果蛮好的。 

this is happening because you're just going over. Its just very high. But if you bring it back, for example, let’s rotate it like these. Now we've got really nice texture. 

P72 - 02:01这样就获得材质了。 

very nice model. So we can use it as a good base mountain at the background and stuff like that. So it can go higher like this. 

P72 - 02:20海拔增高点。 

And also obviously, you can start duplicating these guys, like for example, let’s just duplicate the object. You can start moving things around, 

P72 - 02:33复制后-可以移动了。 

Sometimes it does this thing, All you need to do is get rid of opacity map. Remove the texture. 

P72 - 02:44不透明度-移除掉材质。 

And now we're starting to have, like, if you rotate this guy like this. So that could be really nice composition, obviously, you need to remove the diffuse map. 

P72 - 03:03旋转-漫射图-移除掉材质。 

Very good base for your paint or something like that. That's it about using height map as a photo texture. 

P72 - 03:22高位图作为照片材质。
