Designed by Atelier Alter Architects, this small house in the German town of Edersee is part of the Way of Life project initiated by German architect Christoph Hesse and others. It is part of a larger collective design project.

Launched in 2017, it was an intimate residential settlement made up of 19 houses. These houses are scattered in the mountains and lakes, and their special location provides a good natural environment, conducive to the creativity and health of the residents. Distributed residential layout can protect residents' privacy and enhance the possibility of interaction.

The project focuses on exploring the possibility of an alternative life to the crowded modern urban lifestyle: when we have more convenient urban infrastructure such as online work and rapid delivery, can we relocate ourselves in picturesque villages?

Locating a second home in a picturesque rural area can provide a more relaxed and peaceful living environment. At the same time, such projects can help reduce congestion and pollution in cities and promote sustainable development.

The project consists of 7 separate and connected living units -- living room, kitchen, dining room, foyer, lounge, bedroom, equipment - reflecting the basic living needs of an elderly couple. The separate square shape allows each unit to have excellent lighting and ventilation conditions, while the enclosed courtyard allows them to enjoy the wonderful time with the family. And have a private activity space. Of course, we also designed a planter roof for the hostess to take care of herself and a terrace for her grandchildren to play in the water.

This way of life needs to take into account whether the infrastructure and services in rural areas can meet the needs of people, and the problems of service, transportation, communication and water supply need to be given adequate attention and solved. At the same time, aspects such as social and cultural activities need to be considered to avoid problems such as feelings of isolation and social isolation. The building (group) was designed in response to such thinking, taking into account the special needs of special occupants such as artists, writers and the elderly.

Each house is deliberately controlled in floor area (around 110 square meters) and cost (less than 300,000 euros) to reduce energy consumption, and because of the distance from the city, the design will try to use self-contained energy methods, in addition to good insulation and glass panels, also installed solar panels, wood burning heating system to reduce the dependence on external energy supplies, and improve the sustainability and independence of the home - a unique advantage in energy-starved Germany.
