nonstarter 与 一夜暴富

nonstarter，英文的解释是 a person, idea, proposal, plan or any issue that is useless, destined to fail, or has no chance of being accepted or successful,  就是毫无用处，注定会失败，几乎没有任何成功机会的人或计划、想法、建议等。

starter在英文里有参赛的选手、赛马或赛车的意思。所以 nonstarter 最初的意思就是毫无希望在竞赛中得胜的选手、赛马、赛车。然后就就逐渐引申到了赛场外面，那些不可能成功的人、计划、想法等上面。

一夜暴富，这是所有人的梦想吧，用英文怎么说呢？有一个词很好，叫 from rags to riches  英文的解释就是，from poverty to great or exceptional wealth. 从一贫如洗一夜之间变成富甲天下的感觉。

rags, 是烂布片的意思，借指乞丐，从乞丐到富人，就是一夜暴富呗。

要注意的是，这个词和我们常说的“一夜暴富”其实有点差别，在于它本来还是有褒义的，和“美国梦”有很大联系，因为它强调 through one's own effort, 也就是说，本来是类似“白手起家”这样的感觉。在十九世纪，它总被用于那些英雄、灰姑娘之类的成功形象，而其成功总是归功于这些人物自己的努力。但这些年的词典逐渐更新了“一夜暴富”这一层的意思，强调 in a short period of time，即在短时间内完成由极度贫穷到极度富裕的过程。
