Symbolism: Strength of Character & Moral Integrity
“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”
—— Helen Keller
The most striking feature of the gladiola is its tall, sword-like spire pointing toward the heavens. When the distinctive plants were brought to Europe from Africa and Asia they were named for gladiators, ancient Roman soldiers who lived and died by the sword. Because of this association, in the Victorian Language of Flowers the gladiola symbolized the romantic gesture of figuratively “piercing one’s heart”for the sake of love. The elegant flowers also project the meaning of moral integrity and strength of character.
