The Greek word heliotrope means “turns toward the sun”. In ancient Greek mythology, the maiden Clytia was so enamored of Apollo she would gaze at him each day as he passed in his chariot pursuing another love. The gods took such pity on the forlorn Clytia that they turned her into a fragrant flower, whose face is forever gazing upward. If you observe heliotropes you will notice the flowers and foliage are turned toward the sun. The heliotrope has become a symbol of eternal devotion and dreams fulfilled.
