Q:chesstempo

Q:chesstempo
A:非常棒!
Q:chesstempo

A:当然!

For this interview, I tracked down Richard, the director of CHESSTEMPO's website. This interview was conducted by E-mail. Through this interview, we will have a better chance to know why and the story behind the creation of Chesstempo. The following "Q" stands for "interview question" and "A" for "interview answer" .
Q: Let's invite Richard to brief Chinese chess fans on Chesstempo.
A:Hi Zoushen, thanks for inviting me to do this interview. Thanks also for all the hard work you put in to helping out with the Chinese translation of the site!
Q: Have you been to China before?
A:Not yet. My daughter visited last year as part of a school exchange program, and based on her report, I’m keen to get there myself in the near future!
Q: What do you think about chess in China?
A:It is an exciting time for Chess in China, with players such as Ding Liren and Wang Hao featuring high up in the FIDE rankings list.
Q: Do you work alone?
A:We currently have two developers working on the site, myself, and my development partner. We also get a lot of help from the Chesstempo community, with contributions such as translations and problem comment making adding great benefit to the site.
Q: What choice did you make to start Chesstempo?
A:I was looking for a tool to help improve my own chess, and didn’t see anything that did what I wanted, so I started work on Chesstempo.
Q: How did the first Chesstempo fans get started?
A:Most of our first users arrived via word of mouth.
Q: How is Chesstempo user base doing so far?
A:Great! We just reached our 1 millionth registered user only a few months ago. Tactics training has been our most popular feature, but our play online feature has started to become quite popular, with over a million games played each month now.
Q: After Creating Chesstempo, there must have been a lot of difficulties?
A:Web technologies move quickly, and we’ve needed to spend a lot of time keeping up to date with the latest technologies. We released the new version of the site at the start of the year, and we are still in the process of converting the rest of the old site over. The larger the community gets, the more time that needs to be spent on making sure the community runs smoothly. For example, we’ve had to invest a lot of time into anti-cheating technologies for example, to make sure the games are played as fairly as possible.
Q: Does the name Chesstempo mean anything?
A:Well, literally it means “Chess time”, but “Tempo” has a specific meaning in chess too. Actually there was a silly practical reason for the name. I had planned to call the site “Chess tactics”, but decided that name might be too limiting if we wanted to add more features later. However I already had a logo I’d created with the letters “CT” in the logo, so changing the name idea before we launched from “ChessTactics” to “ChessTempo” meant I didn’t need to change the logo :-)
Q: How does Chesstempo differ from other chess websites?
A:I think our main strength is our community, especially the problem solving community. The contributions solvers have made to the problem comments on chesstempo means there is a lot of well thought out commentary made on all the problems, which makes it much easier to understand each solution. While some other sites have tactics with comments, I don’t think any of them are as useful and well written as the comments on Chesstempo.
Q: My students and I often train and play online on Chesstempo. Could you recommend a child-friendly training on Chesstempo?
A:Children probably benefit from many of the custom set features available to premium members. These allow problem solvers to be given problem sets with only one theme, which is useful for learning the basics such as “Pin”, “Fork” etc. Custom sets also allow sets to target a specific rating range , which helps in avoiding discouragement for children who are new to the game. Other custom set features, such as spaced repetition or sets that target only mistakes can also help speed up learning time.
Q: At present, the new Chesstempo website is still being perfected. Do you think there will be any new function or new training after the new website is finished?
A:Definitely! We are already working on completely new features, but we will not talk about these until they are released :-)
Q: Chesstempo Chinese translation is about to be completed (or has already been completed) ,Do you have anything to say to Chinese chess fans that you would like to say?
A: Firstly, I’d like to thank you again for the large amount of time you’ve spent on the translation. We’ve had some Chinese users already using the site, but I hope the translation will allow many more to start enjoying playing games and training on Chesstempo. China has become a very important chess playing nation, and it is great to finally have a translation available!
Q: Thank you so much for the interview. At the end of the interview, could you recommend a chess book or a favorite player?
A:It has been my pleasure! There are so many excellent chess books, it is hard to single out just one. My favourite historical player was probably Mikhail Tal. His flare for tactics fits in well with the theme of the initial version of Chesstempo when it was a site that only offered Tactics training.
