Ido Portal Movement Culture

'My Body'. One facet of an unknown coin....
These words and the way we use them is very revealing of our concept of 'self'.
'My body hurts', 'I don't like my body', etc all point at some extreme and basic dissociation in our perception of ourselves, one that is deeply ingrained in us.
Further, that dissociation in our culture and history produced methods and systems that are supposed to 'help us with our bodies'. From various training modalities, to spiritual 'body work' to modern medicine, such approaches are the commonality.
Yes, one can target and effect the 'body' layer but the effects will never be contained within that layer alone and will manifest in unpredictable ways in other areas of our 'being'.
Since the body is 'targeted', our awareness of either wanted or undesired effects in other layers is often weak and we eventually drift in some direction or alternatively receive little benefit from some irreversible & immense investments and manipulations.
These are the common and disappointing longer term results of 'targeted body work' which is attempted with the body layer alone/mostly in mind - surgeries, body targeted therapies & training modalities. In the short term, at times, one can receive some benefits and hence such methods are useful in emergency situations where the long term is not on the map at all but otherwise... Results will vary from unpredictable to harmful while relapses and reoccurring issues are common. Deceiving us, AN EFFECT is often confused with the DESIRED EFFECT.
In order to truly go through a needed transformation of some deep issues, one must stop conceptualizing one self as in possession of a 'body' to be fixed or even as some kind of a collection of unrelated layers that must be resolved one by one. The totality is bigger than the sum of its parts, but we are not fully aware of all the parts anyways.
There ARE ways to approach that totality. There has always been such methods around us, employed successfully, humbly, honestly.
Tomorrow - a post of the other side of the coin. Stay tuned.

"The mind" - another facet of an unknown coin*
The concept of having a separated 'mind' that exists on some plain unaffected and from which we perceive and conduct ourselves is another false idea most hold, consciously or not.
The mind cannot be separated from our sensory experience nor from the physical body as these and other various layers interact and work together to produce, among many other things, the sense of self. We discover daily more contributions from the gut, the microbiome, etc...
Attempting to 'fix the mind' is hence a 'mosquito's fart attempting to hold back a tornado'. A person with certain make up and 'character' will also for example exhibit certain movement habits and tendencies, certain dynamic posturing, certain tonality, etc...
So, in order to transform certain innate behavior, 'mental' habits, etc one must be able to properly target other collaborative layers of our being, beyond what we perceive as our 'mind' alone.
One can view for example the breathing quality, coordination, muscular tonality or shoulder positioning of people who went through certain mentally traumatic events. How can we expect to transform such deep issues without touching these layers as well?! We often fail and turn to chemicals.
The mind, just like the body, cannot be isolated in any way effectively. Systems that attempt to address it alone are ultimately prone to fail in addressing deep and overarching issues.
'To know' has become the center focus of our culture along with its limited brain/mind focused approach yet we have lost the most important 'TO BE' which includes a lot of other layers like perception, the body, emotional make up, etc...
One cannot know his way into 'being'...
Tomorrow, another post on the third facet of the coin. Yes, there IS a third facet and we shall locate it and discuss. Stay tuned.

* The coin analogy as it refers to body/mind is a concept I picked up from my friend Rasmus Ölme phd and his doctoral thesis From Model to Module
From Model to Module

So far I've pointed at the limitations of attempting to target our 'body' or 'mind' alone and missing the full complexity of our being. I've also mentioned a possibility of a third facet of the coin. But how can there we another face to a coin??
The answer lies in setting the coin in motion or more specifically - spinning it. As the coin starts to spin, the two facets will appear at the same time! It is a manifestation of the third facet.
It is the magic of MOVEMENT that is responsible for that unraveling.
Movement
Movement is unique as it naturally allows the aware unification of our being to arise. It does not guarantees it, movement can be also be done superficially and without awareness nor immersion but GOOD MOVEMENT (a rarity, I'm afraid) enables one to slide into a state where body and mind are no longer 'alternating' but collaborate and act together as a unified whole.
Many have that experience of immersive movement while engaging in activities like rock climbing, extreme sports, etc and often call these activities 'my meditation'. Actually, I completely disagree on this matter: such immersive activities are not to be confused with the conscious control and command of our unified awareness as these activities use factors like danger, competitiveness, etc as technologies that 'charm' one into that immersive state yet in our day to day this does not move us closer to live that awareness in other areas and in simple acts of being.
Meditation/Stillness practice has its place, just like I believe it has its limitations. The same is true for the Moving Practice.
How shall we then apply the Movement approach to resolution of issues and for complete self development?
This will be explored in the next post. Stay tuned and feel free to ask question below!
