Sophie Allison’s impeccably catchy new single channels ’90s alt rock through contemporary sound sculpture.
Sophie Allison
Soccer Mommy’s Sophie Allison wears dissonance like camouflage, disguising the darkest dreams with bubblegum hooks and lacing sugar-coated vocals with salt. The contradiction disguises a cry for help; sweet melodies give cover to sour sentiment. Soccer Mommy has often used this technique to poke fun at Allison’s vulnerabilities, but on her latest song “Shotgun,” she welcomes the overwhelming—and often terrifying—surrender of letting yourself fall in love, knowing it’s probably going to hurt.
Allison’s ear for vocal and guitar tones remains impeccable. “Shotgun” opens with a low-tuned sandpaper riff that’s gentle without being soft, before tumbling off a cliff into a dizzying hook that’s more melodic than logical. Her new album Sometimes, Forever is her first to be produced by Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin, whose mastery of multitrack sound sculpture appears to have influenced the first single’s arrangement; Allison’s tones are still distinct, but where once there was air in the mix, there’s now density, clean guitars made rougher and more tightly wound with each new layer stacked atop one another.
There’s no telling what will happen when you hand a twentysomething musician known for bedroom recordings the keys to a fancy studio. But where some artists might find themselves a bit lost in the sauce, Allison is thriving, equipped with the tools to make a record as bombastic as the ones that first fueled her nostalgic ’90s alt rock dreams.
