Captain Ben Fawcett has bought an unusual taxi and has begun a new service. The 'taxi' is a small Swiss aeroplane called a 'Pilatus Porter'. This wonderful plane can carry seven passengers. The most surprising thing about it, however, is that it can land anywhere: on snow, water, or even on a ploughed field. Captain Fawcett's first passenger was a doctor who flew from Birmingham to a lonely village in the Welsh mountains. Since then, Captain Fawcett has flown passengers to many unusual places. Once he landed on the roof of a block of flats and on another occasion, he landed in a deserted car park. Captain Fawcett has just refused a strange request from a businessman. The man wanted to fly to Rockall, a lonely island in the Atlantic Ocean, but Captain Fawcett did not take him because the trip was too dangerous.

1、The 'taxi' is a small Swiss aeroplane called a 'Pilatus Porter'.

be called …

2、The most surprising thing about it, however, is that it can land anywhere: on snow, water, or even on a ploughed field.

that it can land anywhere

Money is what we are badly in need of.

My concern is whether he will come or not.

on snow, water, or even on a ploughed field.

3、Since then, Captain Fawcett has flown passengers to many unusual places.

so far = up to now 强调终点

fly:

The aeroplane is flying over the river.

② vi.

fly sb./sth to …

He has flown his car to France.

drive sb to …

My friend drove me to Tianjin.

4、Once he landed on the roof of a block of flats and on another occasion, he landed in a deserted car park.

once…and on another occasion 一次……

Once I met him on the street and on another occasion, I met him in the library.

5、Captain Fawcett has just refused a strange request from a businessman.

①refuse vs decline vs exclude vs reject

He refused to go with me after our quarrel.

The boy declined/refused to do what was told.

I have declined his invitation because I must be home now.

Closing the window excludes street noise.

They rejected his application for membership.

request for sth 要求得到

6、The man wanted to fly to Rockall, a lonely island in the Atlantic Ocean, but Captain Fawcett did not take him because the trip was too dangerous.

take sb to …

You are very kind.

This is where our basic interest lies.

The reason (why) he was dismissed is that he was careless and irresponsible.

a broken up = a cup which has broken before

boiled water = water that has been boiled

falling leaves = leaves that are falling

the barking dog = the dog that is barking

This the the only food left.

The people questioned are two high students.

I noticed a concerned look in his eyes. 关切的

All parents concerned will be present.

The man standing at the gate is my teacher = The man who is standing at the gate is my teacher.

flying fishes = fishes that can fly

a puzzling problem = a problem that puzzles people

falling leaves = leaves that are falling.

the rising sun = the sun that is rising

a deserted car park = a car park which has been deserted

a stolen car = a car which was stolen

fallen leaves = leaves that have fallen

a married man = a man that has married.

take a taxi
