In this image, researchers provide an unprecedented look at the human brain. Alkemade et al. , combine microscopic images with ultra-high field MRI to create a comprehensive 3D map with a level of detail that could provide a unique resource for future brain studies. According to the group, the data gathered from these maps can help researchers worldwide bridge microanatomy, neuroimaging and systems neuroscience.

Artistic rendering of MEMS cantilevers filtering color to display an image. Optical displays are a widely used technology, found in smartphones, computers, and TVs, but they produce a large amount of e-waste that is not recycled. Han et al. , designed a cost-effective, full range color display using only aluminum and silicon oxide, two common and recyclable materials. An aluminum nanohole array filters white light into red, blue, and green, the brightness of which is then controlled by MEMS miniaturized cantilevers. This optical display design provides a path toward economically viable and recyclable electronics.

Two mural fragments depicting the 7 Deer day-sign (top) and partial hieroglyphic text (bottom) discovered at the Mayan excavation site of San Bartolo, Guatemala. The fragments were among 249 pieces of lime plaster found within the Las Pinturas pyramid complex. The 7 Deer fragment represents a day in the 260-day Mayan calendar and the text fragments reveal an established writing tradition. Using radiocarbon dating, Stuart et al. , date the earliest written evidence of the use of the ancient Mayan calendar to about 300 BCE. The fragments and painted murals reported, precede other well-known mural chambers in San Bartolo by 150 years.

A thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sheet is twisted into multilayered scrolled yarn. For millennia, humans have twisted stretchable sheets to form functional yarns to create clothing items, string instruments, and upcycle plastic. Chopin and Kudrolli , develop an elasto-geometric framework to understand the physical mechanisms involved in twisting stretchable sheets into self-assembled architectures. The tensional twist-folding strategy could prove useful for advanced manufacturing due it its efficacy in redeploying appropriate soft materials.

An artist rendering shows biomimetic soft robotic crawlers traversing the stomach. Ze et al., developed a magnetically actuated, origami crawler that stores and releases drugs while navigating through severely confined spaces. According to Ze et al., the crawler overcomes obstacles caused by contact between tissues and organs that can hinder the motion and function of soft machines. The minimally invasive device could be used in biomedical applications to diagnose and treat disease.
