I walked into the shop. The photographer had finished conversation, turned, began to walk towards me.Suddenly he stopped. My first thought was that he had recognised me.Then I realised that he wasn't looking at me,but past to the street outside.I turned to follow his gaze. The man who had stepped from the car,the man in the photographs, was right outside the shop, though he seemed to be only talking to people in the street. I thought this woud be the ideal time to straighten out the mistake that had been made. Here was the photogrpher and here was the man whose photographs I had been given.
I took a step closer to the photographer and put my hand into my pocket to take out the envelope. As the man saw me,his expression changed to one of absolute terror. The fishmonger was standing at my elbow, quietly carving a steak from the smaller tunny fish displayed on the slab. The photographer spran forward, grabbed the knife from the fishmonger and lunged towards me with it.It missed me by a hairbreadth.
I backed away. The man followed.I grabbed the first thing I could see with which to defend myself-the head of one of the swordfish.Grasping it by its sword with both hands,I swung the heavy head at my attacker. The head caught him full on the chest. He reeled back and the knife spun out of his hand, landing between the open jaws of the giant tunny fish.He made a dive for it.Slithering on the wet slab,he missed, his hand dislodging the stick that propped open the huge mouth. The upper jaw clamped downon his wrist. He struggled to get it out.I saw my changce, and ran.
There was total confusion in the market. The man in the photogrphs was being bundled back into the car by two men who must have been following him.No-one was trying to stop me as I headed towards to a narrow alley which looked like a way out.
I reached the alley, only to find my way blocked by a man who was staggering about and obviously drunk. He was eating boiled octopus from a small, aluminium foil dish.I tried to push past him,but he grabbed my arm, holding it,it seemed to steady himself, but in a grip that was like a vice(8)!( 文章阅读网:www.sanwen.net )
