Once I was clear of the rain of hot ash,I paused to catch my breath.I looked around me,but there was no sign of Filippo Gela,or the other jeep.I only had Jamesom's word that it had ever exisisted,but what had happened to Jamesom?Had he been shot?Had he been thrown out?Had he jumped?Now I began to wonder whether it was Jameson who was the killer.Had I been intended to disappear with the jeep into the firey furnace below me?I refused to belived it.
I started to search for Jameson,but the jeep must have run many miles down the hill.It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.I scrambled slowly up to what I thought must be the north wall of the crater.Once through it ,I ran down the hillside.By good luck more than judgement,I found Piano Provenzana,but the ski resort was closed and there was no one about.
I struggled on downhill through the pine woods,stopping at several of the many streams to ease my burns.A rough road led me into Linguarlossa.An early farm worker,pushing a bicycle,nearly turned tail when he saw my wild appearance,but the offer 10,000 lira,quikly persuaded him to lend me the ancient machine.I told him that I would leave it at the harbour at Taormina.
The road down to Taoemina was steep and I made the journey in record time.There were only two fishing boats in the harbour.I propped the bicycle against a wall and ran towards them.A young man was leaning over the stern of the one nearest to me.

我开始寻找詹姆森，但是那辆吉普车肯定已经下了山并且跑了好远了；我这样寻找，简直是在一大堆干草里寻找一颗针！我慢慢地向上爬去，向着我认为那就是火山口北面像一堵墙一样的山壁。一穿过火山口，我就向山坡下跑去。主要靠运气而不是判断，我找到了皮亚诺·普罗文扎诺滑雪场，但这个滑雪胜地却关门闭锁，四望空无一人。我只好挣扎着独自下山，穿过松树林，经过了几条小溪，并在小溪边歇息过，以减轻烧伤的疼痛。一条崎岖不平的路把我引进了林瓜罗萨。一位推着自行车上早班的农场工人，一见我这副野人一般的样子，吓得掉头就要跑；一听我说打算出价一万里拉借用他这辆老古董，很快就同意了。我给他说，将把这辆自行车放在陶尔米纳码头。
到陶尔米纳的下坡路很陡，我以创纪录的时间完成了这段旅程。只有两艘渔船停靠在码头。我靠墙架稳自行车就跑过去。离我最近那一艘，一个小伙子斜靠在船尾。
“用不着跑！”他叫道，“我们不会在五分钟或十分钟内开船。”
“你怎么······怎么知道，你等的人就是我？”
他笑了起来。
“你这副模样，活脱脱就是刚从“恶魔岛”逃出来的！豆差莫得约警和狗叫声了！”
他伸出手来握手。
“我待会儿······解释。”
“用不着，”他说，“我们不靠提问来挣钱。”（34）

1，恶魔岛：世界上有两座“恶魔岛”，一处是美国旧金山恶魔岛（Alcatraz Island，英语俗称The Rock）是位于美国加州旧金山湾内的一座小岛，面积0.0763平方公里，四面峭壁深水，联外交通不易，因而被美国政府选为监狱建地，曾设有恶魔岛联邦监狱，关押过不少知名的重刑犯，于1963年废止，现与金门大桥同为旧金山湾的著名观光景点。另一处是南美洲法属圭亚那有座“货真价实”的恶魔岛（Devil's Island），巧合的是它也曾设立过监狱。
