שִׁמְעוֹן הַצַּדִּיק הָיָה מִשְּׁיָרֵי כְנֶסֶת הַגְּדוֹלָה. הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר, עַל שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים הָעוֹלָם עוֹמֵד, עַל הַתּוֹרָה וְעַל הָעֲבוֹדָה וְעַל גְּמִילוּת חֲסָדִים:  

Shimon the Righteous was one of the last of the men of the great assembly. He used to say: the world stands upon three things: the Torah, the Temple service, and the practice of acts of piety.

Great Assembly

Shimon the Righteous was a high priest and teacher at a time of political flux in the region. He is credited with meeting Alexander the Great and convincing him not to attack Jerusalem. He was the first teacher mentioned in Pirkei Avot and among the last surviving members of the Great Assembly, a Rabbinic legislative body that existed in the Second Temple period.

שמעון היה כוהן גדול בתקופה של תמורות פוליטיות באזור. מסופר שהוא נפגש עם אלכסנדר הגדול ושכנע אותו להימנע מהתקפת ירושלים. הוא החכם הראשון המוזכר בפרקי אבות ומאחרוני שיירי כנסת הגדולה, גוף מחוקק של חכמים מתקופת הבית השני.

שִׁמְעוֹן הָיָה כוֹהֵן גָּדוֹל בַּתְּקוּפָה שֶׁל תְּמוּרוֹת פּוֹלִיטִיוֹת בָּאֵזוֹר.

 מִסוֹפֵר שֶׁהוּא נִפְגַּשׁ עִם אַלֶכְּסָנְדֶר הַגָּדוֹל וְשִׁכְנֵעַ אוֹתוֹ לְהִימַנֵעַ מֵהַתְקְפַת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם.

 הוּא הַחָכָם הָרִאשׁוֹן הַמֻּזְכָּר בְּפִרְקֵי אָבוֹת וְמֵאַחֲרוֹנֵי שִׁירֵי כְּנֶסֶת הַגְּדוֹלָה, גּוּף מְחוֹקֵק שֶׁל חֲכָמִים מִתְּקוּפַת הַבַּיִת הַשֵּׁנִי.
