Assessing inequality in the Criminal Justice System using novel causal inference methods and Bayesian spatial models
截止日期:2023年7月27日
1 Project
About the project:
The Lammy Review showed evidence of discrimination in the Criminal Justice System. The aim of this project is to use causal inference methods to corroborate these findings by quantifying the impact of discrimination in sentencing using Data First: Criminal Justice System Linked Datasets.
The proposed aims of this studentship are to understand:
whether and how early life course events such as education and being in care are impacted by systematic discrimination;
how early experiences impact involvement with the Criminal Justice system later in life and whether discrimination continues to play a part;
whether there are regional differences (e.g. London vs the rest of England).
The following methods could be used:
longitudinal mediation analysis to determine the impact of being in care and educational attainment on later outcomes such as violence and arrest and how discrimination confounds these relationships;
proximal causal inference to determine the impact of discrimination on the pathway between life events in relation to violence and involvement with the Criminal Justice System;
Bayesian Spatial analysis to address spatial/regional differences in discrimination.
We are looking for someone who:
has some experience in data analysis, and is interested in analysing 'big data'
is interested in understanding how life events can lead to individuals being involved in the criminal justice system and what part discrimination plays in this process
is interested in causal inference broadly and can see themselves developing methods in statistical causality
2 Funding
The ADR Studentship is tenable for three years and will cover full fees at the UK home rate (for international students, LSE will cover the difference between UK Home rate and overseas fees) and provide an annual stipend (which for 2022 entry was £19,668) for three years, commencing in 2023.
A fourth-year stipend will also be provided by LSE which will match the UKRI rate at that time.
3 Entry requirements
Applicants should have completed (or be on track to complete) a taught MSc in Statistics, Mathematics or a related discipline (e.g. economics, etc.) or equivalent, plus an undergraduate degree of good standing.
There is also an English language requirement for all applicants for whom English is not their first language.
International students may consult the graduate prospectus for details of equivalent qualifications.

瑞典皇家理工学院招收全奖博士生
职位信息
Doctoral student position - Microalgae in Human Nutrition and Health
1 Project background
Micronutrient deficiency represents one of the biggest global nutritional problems. For instance, iron deficiency is the most common global nutritional deficiency, affecting more than 2 billion people, among which more than half are anaemic. Iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a global health problem that causes impaired cognitive development and growth in children, decreased work productivity and increased maternal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy. It is particularly common in low- and middle-income countries due to low-iron diets and primarily affects women and children.
Dietary interventions are currently considered to be the best strategy to overcome IDA. For instance, red meat and fish contain high amounts of highly bioavailable heme iron. However, these foods are relatively expensive and not or poorly consumed by vegetarians and vegans. Plant-based food is getting increasing attention in recent years due to its expected nutritional value and better sustainability. However, iron absorption from plant-based food is generally not high due to overall low (bioavailable) iron content and commonly present iron uptake inhibitors. Novel food formulations or sources with high contents of bioavailable iron are urgently needed to fight the global challenges presented by IDA.
Microalgae are small unicellular microorganisms that could be produced under photoautotrophic, heterotrophic, or mixotrophic modes that are getting high attention as more sustainable novel food globally. Microalgae could contain hundred times more iron compared to beef, a commonly accepted iron-rich food. Microalgae could be an important mineral feedstock for human nutrition and health that is not well explored, yet.
2 Job description
As a doctoral student, you will be responsible for research working towards exploring how to produce bioavailable iron in microalgae during bioprocessing, labelling iron using stable isotopes in photobioreactors, and investigating the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of microalgae-derived iron using simulation of gastrointestinal food digestion and human cells.
Your tasks will include:
Summarize the existing knowledge on micronutrients from microalgae and other novel foods for human nutrition and health
Explore and design bioprocess procedure to produce microalgae with highly bioavailable iron
Characterize and analyse the mineral compositions of different microalgae biomass
Validate laboratory methods to label minerals in microalgae cells
Assess the bioaccessibility of minerals in microalgae
Generate human intestinal epithelial cells for iron absorption analysis
Compare bioaccessibility and bioavailability of iron from different microalgae and conventional animal- and plant-based foods
Identify related molecular machineries relevant for iron absorption
Support teaching activities and co-supervise MSc and BSc students
Act at the interface between science and technology when supervising students and collaborating with partners from academia and industry
Support grant applications for the team and support related activities from Singapore-ETH Centre, ETH World Food System Center WFSC, and ETH for Development ETH4D competence center
3 Your profile
A MSc (or equivalent) in Nutrition and Health, Biotechnology, Bioprocessing, Cell or Molecular Biology, Food Science and Technology (or similar)
A strong passion for nutrition and health, sustainability, and novel food
Expertise and interest in working with biological systems (e.g. microalgae and human cells, experience in working on microalgae and (or) nutrition assessment will get priority)
Experience and strong interest in nutrition assessment using in vitro models (gastrointestinal food digestion and human cells)
Ability to work in a dynamic, international, and interdisciplinary team
Ability to collaborate with different teams and national and international partners
Interest in working independently and supervising students
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
Scientific curiosity and motivation to perform scientifically rigorous experimental work
