3.6. Move Layers

P23 - 00:00 

Welcome back. I showed several ways to select layers. Now let's talk about moving them.

Let's start with the canvas. You've already seen me use the move tool so far in this course.

You select any layer or folder, and you can drag it into any position, including outside the canvas area, although i'd advise against it. That's easy to get.

This applies to several layers of folders at a time. When you have multiple active tabs, you may want to move some elements around.

saying, I want this Top card in my blank project.

Here's how you do it. You selected group from the layers panel.

You make sure you are on the move tool. you click and drag on the canvas until you get it above your other tab. Wait a moment, and photoshop will reveal that project.

Now let go anywhere on the canvas. That's it. So this process is done by working on the canvases.

I don't recommend you drag from the layers panel as that's not ideal.

And here's a neat trick. Say I want to position this business card in the middle of my blank canvas.

Here's how you do that. You select and drag it, but you also hold down shift.

When you let go, you will now see it in the middle of your project.

Going back to the initial tab. Don't worry if it seems like you're messing up your positioning.

This is only temporary. When you switch projects, you will see your group is exactly where you left it.

The only exception is when you let go of your mouse click as you drag it across.

When you want extra precision while you relocate your layers.

Here's what you can do. You can use your arrow keys to nudge this card in one pixel increments.

Right now I'm tapping the left arrow key. Each tap means this group is moving another pixel to the left.

This is great for fine tuning purposes. But if you don't want to mess your keys all day long, add shift to the mix,

this will move it in 10 pixel increments.

So three taps means that this will go 30 pixels to the left, three taps to the right, without shift equals 27 pixels in total. That's how you use these arrow keys in a real world project.

Focusing on the layers panel. We saw, we can cycle through our layers with Alt and our square bracket keys.

As you can see, I'm selecting layers fast. But if we swap Alt with control, now we're repositioning layers.

Take this thing yet. If I use control on my left square bracket key,

it's going to move inside this folder. If I repeat that hockey, it will go underneath this group called card two.

So this is a great way to reposition layers through a simple hockey control and your square brackets.

Most of the time, you'll want to use your mouse, though. Here's how this works. Let me close these folders.

If I want this layer underneath this folder. 

P23 - 02:45想让图层在文件夹下面。 

I can click, hold and drag.

Once I release, it's going to be positioned here.

Please remember, this stacking order is supremely important. Your layers should follow a Top to bottom approach.

This is why we are taking the time to discuss this subject. If you throw them around randomly, your project may not look the same.

The most obvious example is with your background layer. If you place it at the Top of your layers panel, nothing else will be visible.

Each project is going to be different. So there is no definitive Guide.

My advice is you try to create a Top to bottom order. here.

This would be the following. The vignette, the cards, the shadows. And finally the background.

If you miss this order in any way, the result won't be the same. Now, here's the tricky deal. If we open this Top folder and the second one, you will see it sometimes tricky to reposition our layer.

I'll grab my vignette and drag it down. 

P23 - 03:44选中贴图拖动下来。 

Notice this highlight that shows up when I'm directly above any of these two folders. That means this layer will be placed inside that group.

If you let go, you'll see it's now at the Top of it. By the way, it doesn't matter if the group is collapsed or expanded.

The same thing applies either way. Okay, let me go back.

in previous versions of photoshop. When you did the same thing, the layer would go to the bottom of that folder.

If you want that to happen, hold shift, click and drag. Now this vignette is the last layer inside this group.

So remember, if you simply reposition it, it's going to go on Top.

If you hold shift and you drag it above any folder, it will be placed at the bottom of the stack.

Of course, nothing prevents you from dragging it in any position whatsoever. If you have the group expanded.

by manually doing so, you get complete control. Notice this horizontal line that shows you between which two layers. This is going to be placed.

That's all fine. But let me complicate things. Say I want to reposition this vignette underneath my mask there. It's a simple, right? Just drag it down. Well, here's the thing.  I’ll drag it and i'll see this highlight. So far. So good. When I let go, can you tell if this is inside the group or outside it?

If you want to be sure, collapse this folder? As you see, it's outside it. Let me go back and repeat the very same process. I look for the highlights and drop it. Let's do our test. Ok. Now it's inside. I know this is tricky to get, but it all depends on how you drop it. If you move your mouse downwards, it's going to be outside it. If you move your mouse up, you will place it inside.

This is one of those few cases where you have to try it for yourself. You have this PSD attached. So see if you get the idea. And with that, we finish this lecture. Please practice a bit, because coming up next. There's an exercise where you have to go through loads of layers and perform various tasks quickly.

3.7. EXERCISE Layer Dexterity

 Experiencing. I hope you're ready for an exercise, because this is going to test your skills up until this point.

Open the PSD file that you have attached to this lecture. And you'll see it's pretty hectic. We have layers all over the place. Nothing is labeled. There are a few groups, but they are randomly created. 

P24 - 00:21随机创建的几组。 

Overall. It's a mess. Here’s your task. I want you to select, move and group all these layers based on their color. 

P24 - 00:29基于颜色选择移动所有图层遮罩。 

There's five types in total, yellow, teal, green, white, pink. 

P24 - 00:34黄 青 绿 白 粉。 

You have to do four things. efficiently select them however you want to do that, group them into individual folders, labeled them with their respective color, and move them in a separate side of the canvas.

This means you should have all the yellow layers in the Top left of the canvas, teal in the Top right. Same thing for the bottom sides. And the 5th one should be placed in the middle.

What’s important is, you have five folders in total at the end that are properly labeled and these layers are separated from all the other colors.

This activity will take you around 5 to 7 minutes to complete, depending on your approach.

Here are a few tips. You'll have to zoom in and out, because some of these layers are particularly tricky.

You shift to select multiple layers together, review your cheat sheets, and identify which selecting techniques are best suited for the job.

You can use the existing groups or you can discard them and create new ones.

Of course, it's up to you. If you want to focus on the layers panel. Or if you want to work on the canvas area alone, it's important you time yourself because i'd like you to repeat this exercise.

3.8. Solution Layer Dexterity

 Solution for layered ecstasy. Hi, how did you do this exercise? Did you post your time in the comments section? I hope you did, because I'm really curious how you handled it your first time around.

Now let me explain how i'd approach it.

First, I toggle all the visibility of each group, so I can see if there is any help.

As I see it, it doesn't seem like it. 

P25 - 00:20看起来相关度不高。 

So next i'll select all these layers with CTRL ALT A. 

P25 - 00:24Alt A控选图层。 

Then i'll right click on a group. And from this list, i'll hit ungroup layers. 

P25 - 00:29解除图层组。 

That's because these folders are absolutely useless. And i'd rather create some myself. 

P25 - 00:34看到没用的想自己创建。 

Here's where you have lots of options. The slow method is to start from the Top of the layers panel on Toggle each layers’ visibility.

After you recognize it on the canvas, you can rename it green, or whatever color it is.

This will take ages. So here's my approach. First i'll select my background layer by control clicking it.

next. I'll lock it.

This will allow me to drag across and get several difficult items.

I'll choose any color, let's say yellow, because it seems easier.

I'll hold CTRL and select this heart layer.

Next. I'll keep holding down the CTRL key, but i'll also add shift. And now I have 4 out of 6 yellow layers.

This one is transparent, and it's overlapping with this white circle.

So I have to be a bit careful. I'll click in that region. But if I want to check which layer I selected, i'll move them a bit to the side. Ok? It seems this is not Ok.

So i'll undo with CTRL z. with both modifier keys held down. I'll click again on the circle this time on its bottom half, so I can easily be selected.

Now i'll switch to the zoom tool by pressing z. I'll go in much closer. And now I can click again on this icon.

Please don't let go of the CTRL and shift keys. Otherwise, you lose your four layers, and you'll wind up with just this one. Ok.

Now I have five.

Let me zoom out with control one, and i'll get the last yellow icon from the left side.

Great stuff. use CTRL G. And we have our first group.

Let me rename it to yellow. Of course, we're not done. We've selected and grouped them, but we also have to move them into a separate area on the canvas.

Let's place all these layers in the Top left, open your folder and move them one by one in that region.

This is why this exercise has dexterity in the title. It's not particularly hard, but you have to be fast with your hands.

Now we'll move to the teal color, start with the biggest shapes, for example, this circle. But this time, let's increase our time by repositioning each layer as we select it.

So i'll pick it up with the control click technique, and i'll drag it to the Top right corner of my canvas.

The rest of these items are fairly big, so we won't have any issues with them. Select and repositioned them as fast as you can.

It goes without saying that you should keep one hand on your keyboard and one on your mouse.

This is done, but they're not grouped.

Not a problem. I'll hold CTRL and drag a shape like so, anything will get selected.

And there you go. I have almost 60 layers highlighted in the layers panel. control G to create a new group and rename it to tail.

Of course, you could have done the same thing without locking your background layer. But that would have required a few extra clicks here and there.

Don't feel bad. If you didn't do it this way. It's not important at this point.

This white layer poses a Challenge. I'm not sure if you see it. But here we have a very tiny period symbol. In most cases, i'd suggest you zooming really close and click on it.

But let's take advantage of our locked background layer.

I’ll hold control and i'll make this shape.

There you go. Easy. Now I can place it in the middle of the canvas.

I'll speed up the process while I do the same with all these other ones.

I’ll use the drag selection technique, because it comes in handy in this case.

Remember, you are always looking for a fast result. You don't want to slave away. By doing unnecessary manual labor.

If there is a faster way, use it. No matter if you're working on personal projects or if you're going to use your skills for a paying job, nobody cares, if you spend two minutes or two hours on it.

All counts at the end of the day is your result. And if there's an easier way to do it, why not take advantage of it? Okay. I'm about done with my PSD.

3.9. Arrange Images Quickly

Welcome to this lecture where I will teach you how to arrange images quickly and efficiently.

Photoshop is built for precision, so you should strive to have a pixel perfect design every time.

This, of course means aligning elements precisely, but luckily, we have many tools and features that help us do that.

In this attach PSD, we have two active rectangles on a canvas, and the 3rd one hidden in the layers panel.

We will use them to explore all of our options.

First of all, we're going to talk about smart guides, which can be turned on from view show smart guides.

Now, if you're on the move tool and grab one of the rectangles, you will see some pink lines appear.

Those who are smart guides, and they help you position everything precisely.

You also sense the element wants to snap into place. And that's really helpful.

If you want to try it. Just make sure you have the smart guys active, and you have two rectangles.

Next, we have our guides. Keep in mind, we talked about smart guides. The next ones are just called guides.

To use them when you first have to press CTRL R. Right.

On the Top and left side, we have these measurements. They themselves are pretty useful. But you can go to the site, click, then drag, and you'll see this sign line appeared,

light blue, light, steel, whatever you want to call it.

Again, this snaps into place. For example, if I want to place it in the middle of the rectangle, all I have to do is make sure that layers is active in the layers panel. Then as I drag, you will feel photoshop not due to where the center is.

This works both horizontally and vertically. This allows you to take all the guesswork out of it.

If you want even more precision, you can go to view new Guide. From here. You can specify exactly where you want your guy to be. Just put in a number and press. Ok, great stuff.

for that, Photoshop offers the ability to lock your guides with control Alt semi colon.

Now, no matter how much I hover over it, they won't move.

They can still be hidden with controls semicolon, but you can't move them by accident.

When you want to unlock, just press CTRL ALT semicolon again.

Finally, let's talk about this section up Top next to the show transform controls.

These are the alignment tools, and they help us arrange things fast. The alignment tools always need at least two elements selected in order to make an adjustment.

Here When we have only one layer elected, all tools are closed, because we're missing the second one. That's the condition.

In case you're using upwards, one layer is enough. But here we'll focus on the normal canvas mode.

When we select the entire canvas with control a, we now have two elements, and this entire region lights up.

Not all of it, because for this other part, we need at least three elements selected.

Notice we don't have two different layers. A selection is considered an element, too.

So photoshop shows the available options. Since the main condition of having at least two elements selected is met.

Before we continue, I have to tell you that your photoshop version is important in this case.

in CC 2019. Adobe decided to change the order of these tools. What you see in the options bar is the new way moving forward.

But let's switch to a previous version. It doesn't matter if it's from six months ago or six years ago.

This is how the alignment tools were laid out. I know you may not see a big difference. So let me show you both sets, one on Top of each other.

So these are the new alignment tools.

And this is the old set. What's important is you remember their respective icons or names and not their position.

So don't think about the second icon or the 5th icon. Instead learn them visually or by remembering their names.

Okay? Let's see them in action. Align left edges will move our layer to the left edge of the canvas.

Align horizontal centers places it in the middle,

by the way, to see their names. Just hover over any icon for a couple of seconds.

This will reveal a tool tip, and that's how you can remember their names.

Finally align, right edges does exactly what you think it does. It moves the layer to the right side of the screen.

Right. So far we've used them on two elements, layer and selection.

But let's deselect with control D and see how these tools work with two rectangles selected.

I'll use the next set. Align top edges, looks at both layers, and it uses the one that is higher on the canvas as a reference point.

And there you got this other layer was raised up. What's great is that you can use a line Top edges with confidence. And there you go. and you know this layer that is placed higher on the canvas won't budge.

On the other hand, if I move to the next commander line, vertical centers, both layers are going to be moved equally.

As you can see, it's less predictable, but it's still a fantastic tool.

Please be aware. This works on a regular shapes or any type of layer, not just rectangles.

Finally, if we reset, we can use align bottom edges. In this case, the layer is lower on the canvas will be used as a reference.

Mind you, the stacking order in the layers panel does not matter.

I want to take a moment to mention I use the alignment tools in all projects around the clock. It's essential you learn how to use them. Right? Let's continue.

moving on. To distribute vertical centers, we need to have three elements selected.

So i'll reveal my 3rd layer from this panel. This allows you to stack your three layers, but keep the same distance between them on the y axis or vertically.

See how they are equally spaced out between themselves. This is helpful in all sorts of situations.

Same thing when we move over to distribute horizontal centers. this gives us the same space on the x axis,

you can repeat that a few times until you get the hang of it. I know this seems like a lot of tools, but their icons really tell their story.

Plus, if you get it wrong, just undo with CTRL z and try again.

You’ll get them in no time. We're not done with these alignment tools, but let me take this opportunity to show you another helpful feature.

When you have one layer selected, hold down the CTRL or command key. This will show you the distance between your layer and the edges of your canvas.

This enables you to have pixel perfect precision.

Plus, if you hover over another there, you will get the measurements between the two.
