They perfect (v.使…完美,完善)nature, and are/ perfected by experience: for natural abilities /are like natural plants, that need/ pruning(prune/pru:n/ v. 梅干,(洋)李脯)/ by study; and studies themselves/ do give forth(ad.向外,往外;往前) directions/ too much/ at large, except that/ they/ be bounded(a.受(某事物)约束) in/ by experience.

Crafty(a. 蔑视;侮辱)/ studies, simple men /admire them, and wise men/ use them;for they/ teach not/ their own use; but that/ is a wisdom/ without them, and above them, won /by observation.

Read not/ to contradict(v.反驳,驳斥)/ and confute(v.驳倒,完全否定); nor/ to believe/ and take for granted; nor/ to find talk/ and discourse; but to weigh/ and consider.

Some books/ are to be tasted, others/ to be swallowed, and some /few/ to be chewed /and digested; that is, some books/ are to be read/ only in parts; others/ to be read, but not /curiously; and some few/ to be read wholly, and with/ diligence(a. Some books/ also may be read/ by deputy(请人代表), and extracts(n.节录;选段) /made of themby others; but/ that would be/ only in the less important arguments, and the meaner/ sort of books; else distilled(adj. 由蒸馏得来的) books/ are, like common distilled waters, flashy(a.

Reading/ maketh a full man; conference/ a ready man; and writing/ an exact man. And therefore, if a man/ write little, he had/ need have/ a great memory; if he confer(v.商谈;商议;交换意见;) little, he had/ need have/ a present wit(n.头脑;智慧;); and if he read little, he had/ need have/ much cunning(a.狡猾的,狡诈的 ), to seem/ to know/ that he doth(does的一种形式) not.

    Histories/ make men wise; poets/ witty(a. [古]微妙的;狡猾的;敏锐的;隐约的); natural philosophy/ deep; moral/ grave; logic /and rhetoric(n.修辞;修辞学;) able to contend(v. Abeunt studia in morse.

Nay /there is no stand/ or impediment (n.〔生理问题导致的〕言语[听觉,行动]障碍)/in the wit, but may be wrought(work在旧时的过去式和过去分词) out/ by fit studies: like as diseases/ of the body/ may have appropriate exercises. Bowling is good for the stone/ and reins(n. 肾脏;腰部;感情;肺腑); shooting/ for the lungs /and breast; gentle walking/ for the stomach; riding/ for the head; and the like. So/ if a man's wit/ be wandering(徘徊,闲逛;), let him study the mathematics; for/ in demonstrations, if his wit /be called away/ never so little, he must begin again. If his wit/ be not apt/ to distinguish/ or find differences, let him studythe schoolmen(n. 学校教师;经院哲学家;教授  经院哲学 Scholasticism); for they/ are cymini sectores(句中“cymini sectores”来自拉丁语,英文释义是“dividers of cumin seeds,or hair-splitters”,从  这样的解释中可以体现出经院哲学家们工作的精细程度。来自 <https://www.fx361.com/page/2017/1220/2589702.shtml> ). If he/ be not apt/ to beat over matters, and/ to call up( (陆、海、空军)征召… 参加运动队);) one thing/ to/ prove and illustrate/ another, let him study the lawyers' cases. So every defect(缺点,缺陷,毛病) of the mind/ may have/ a special receipt.
