I’D BE LYING IF I SAID WE DIDN’T GET SOME CURIOUS LOOKS as we headed for the check-in desks. While there were of course other people with androids, there was no one like me, trailing through the airport with a gaffer-taped science projects in tow. I caught a ripple of comments as we passed – ‘Wow, he really needs to upgrade’ from a young student, and ‘Ah, bless’ from a granny. I even heard ‘Maybe he’s doing it for TV?’

I moved with faux dignity, head high, striding through in my blue boating shoes to the check-in queue. Tang shambled mechanically after me and came to a whirring halt at my side. He picked at the gaffer tape.

Tang blinked at me and turned his eyes downward, his arm falling to his side.

‘And don’t bother sighing at me, it doesn’t work.’

Whilst in the queue, we passed a shelf carrying forms to be filled in by passengers with oversized baggage for the hold. While Tang’s attention was drawn to a shiny luggage cart nearby, I hastily filled one in. As I was doing so, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I ignored it.

‘Yes’, I said, ignoring Tang, ‘I also have a bag. It’s new.’ I felt a tug on my shirt shelve.

‘Bro-ken.’

‘What is?’

「何が？」

 

‘Tang is.’

In the excitement of going on a journey, I’d almost forgotten its purpose. Tang gazed at me with his eyelids slanted diagonally, looking like a wounded puppy. I felt my resolve slipping. Nevertheless, I persisted.

僕は旅に出ることに舞い上がり、危うく目的を忘れかけていた。タングが傷ついた子犬みたいに、両の瞼をハの字に下げてくる。決意が揺らいだ。それでも、僕は論そうとした。

 

‘Look, mate, you can’t sit in the plane with me, there’s a special bit for humans and a special bit for … for robots. It’ll be better for you in there.’ I didn’t even believe it myself, and when I looked at the clerk it was clear she’d been won over.

So, I decided to do the sensible thing and ordered a number of complimentary gin and tonics in perhaps a shorter amount of time than was strictly necessary. As I drifted off to sleep, I left Tang staring out of the window.

I woke, several hours later, to Tang’s cool metal grabber poking me in the cheek.

‘Stop poking me, Tang, what do you want?’ I said, keeping my eyes closed.

I opened my left eye and looked in his direction. The hand that wasn’t poking me in the cheek was gesturing toward the seat-back in front of him.

‘It’s a telly, mate, let me sleep.’ I closed my one open eye again and shuffled my flight blanket higher up round my neck. Tang removed his hand from my check, and for a split second I thought he was going to obey me. Then the hand came back, harder this time, smacking my jaw with more force than I think even he intended to give it.

「それはテレビだ。頼むから寝かせてくれ」僕は開けた左目をまた閉じて、毛布を首元まで引き上げた。タングが頬から手を放したので、言うことを聞いてくれるのだと思った次の瞬間、その手が戻ってきた。さっきより強い力で僕の顎を容赦なく叩く。たぶん、タングもそこまで強くするつもりはなかったのではないか。

I spent the next hour cycling through the vast array of shit that was the in-flight entertainment before Tang found something he wanted to watch for more than thirty seconds. There was an animated film about a world inhabited by robots that looked like him, and unsurprisingly he settled on this. There were androids in this film, too, but they were considered weird and different, and Tang thought this wonderful. I guess the moral of the story was about being true to oneself and that being different is not a bad thing, or something like that, but the point was lost on Tang and I chose not to enlighten him. The point, for me, was that he would be quiet for the next ninety minutes or so, underneath the extra-wide foamy headphones specially sourced for him by the stewardess. I closed my eyes gratefully.

それから一時間、僕はタングが三十秒以上飽きずに見ていられるものを探すために、腐るほど豊富にある機内エンターテインメントのラインアップを延々と見せていく破目になった。その中に、タングと似たようなロボットが住む世界を描いたアニメ映画があり、案の定タングはそれに食いついた。映画にはアンドロイドも登場したが、風変わりで異質な存在として描かれているところが気に入ったらしい。映画が伝えようとしているのは、自分に正直に生きることと、人と違うことは悪いことではないというようなメッセージだろうが、タングには通じず、僕も説明はしなかった。僕にとって大事なのは、ここから九十分かそこら、タングが客室乗務員が特別に用意してくれた柔らかなイヤーパッド付きの大きなヘッドホンを装着し、静かにしていてくれることだ。僕はありがたやと目を閉じた。

Ninety minutes later, I woke with a sense of jeja vu.

‘What now?’

‘Again!’ he pointed to his seat-back screen.

‘Are you sure? You’ve just watched it, Don’t you want something else?’

「本当にこれでいいのか？今見たばっかりだぞ。他のものにしなくていいのか？」

 

Tang’s eyelids lowered a little in confusion, then one eye started to blink. It was as if the very suggestion was beyond comprehension.

タングの瞼が少し混乱したように下がり、そのうち片目だけぱちぱちし始めた。僕の提案そのものが理解不能みたいだ。

 

‘Again.’

「もう一回」

 

I lined up the film again for him. ‘You enjoyed it, then?’

僕は同じ映画をもう一度再生してやった。「映画、面白かったんだな？」

 

He made no answer.

タングは答えない。

 

I lifted an earphone. ‘I said, you enjoyed it, then? The film?’

僕は片方のイヤーパッドを持ち上げた。「面白かったんだなって訊いたんだ。この映画」

 

‘Yes,’ he said, removing my hand from the earphone, which he can clamped back to the mesh-covered hold that made up one half of his aural apparatus.

「うん」と言うと、タングは僕の手を払い、聴覚機能の半分を担っている、網状に覆われた右側の穴にイヤーパッドをぎゅっと押し戻した。

 

‘What’s so special about it?’

「この映画の何がそんなに特別なんだい？」

 

He lifted the earphone again.

タングはもう一度イヤーパッドを上げた。

 

‘Good robots fight bad robots,’ he said. This bad to have been the longest sentence I’d heard him speak.

「いいロボット、悪いロボットと戦う」僕がこれまで聞いた中で、これは間違いなく、タングが話した最長の文だった。

 

‘What makes them bad?’

「どうして悪いロボットだと思うんだ？」

 

‘Bad robots bad to good robots.’ He pointed at himself, then at the screen. ‘Good robots bad to bad robots.’

「悪いロボット、いいロボットに悪いことする」タングは自分を指してから、次にモニターを指した。「いいロボット、悪いロボットに悪いことする」

 

So that was it: he liked the film because it showed him a world where his kind were the masters and appeared to be exacting revenge upon androids for former mistreatment. I couldn’t decide whether it was my place to deal with it. One thing was certain – I was either too drunk or too sober to try to explain why two wrongs don’t make a right. I patted Tang’s metal shoulder and left him to it.

つまりこういうことだ。タングが映画を気に入ったのは、その映画では世界を支配するのはタングみたいなタイプのロボットで、曾て惨い仕打ちをしてきたアンドロイドへの復讐を果たしているように見えるからだ。真相を教えるのが果たして僕の役目なのか、決めかねた。ただ、ひとつだけはっきりしていることがある。悪いことをされたからといってやり返していいことにはならない理由を説明するには、僕は飲み過ぎているか、はたまた素面過ぎた。だから、タングの金属の肩を軽く叩いて、そこの解釈は本人に任せることにした。
