As the traditional Chinese festival of Dragon Boat Festival is coming soon, people all over the country are preparing for the celebration. As an important part of the celebration, zongzi, a kind of sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves, is indispensable. Zongzi has a long history. It is said that it originated from the Warring States period (475-221 BC). At that time, there was a famous patriotic poet Qu Yuan. He was slandered by his political opponents and eventually committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo River. The local people were very sad and tried to save him by throwing rice dumplings into the river. Since then, people have been eating zongzi on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year to commemorate Qu Yuan's spirit. Nowadays, zongzi has become an important part of Chinese culture and customs. Different places have different types of zongzi with different fillings. In northern China, people usually make sweet zongzi with red bean paste or jujube paste as filling; while in southern China, salty zongzi with pork or egg yolk as filling is more popular. People usually wrap them in bamboo leaves and tie them with strings before boiling them in water. In conclusion, zongzi is an indispensable part of Dragon Boat Festival and has been passed down for thousands of years. It is a symbol of Chinese culture and customs and shows our respect for our ancestors.
