饮食控制是应对贪食期的重要手段
有时人们不理解限制饮食的必要性,尤其是当他们看到一个苗条的孩子时,不理解为什么父母对他们的饮食如此严格。
由于身体成分的改变(高脂肪肌肉比例),代谢的能量减少。如果不控制饮食,体重会迅速增加,而且很难减掉,此外还会出现食欲过盛(食欲增加)和锻炼能力下降。
在孩子的食欲或对食物的兴趣增加之前,有机会灌输饮食调整和健康的饮食习惯,可以使贪食期不那么严重。
生长激素疗法改善了身体成分,使当今儿童的饮食限制减少,但尚未正常化。

Sometimes people do not understand the need for dietary restriction, especially when they see a slim child and cannot understand why parents are being so strict about what they eat. Due to an altered body composition (high fat to muscle ratio), less energy is metabolised. Without dietary control, rapid weight gain occurs and is very difficult to lose, additionally compounded by hyperphagia (increased appetite) and a reduced ability to exercise.
The opportunity to instill diet modifications and healthy eating habits well before the child’s appetite or interest in food increases, can result in the hyperphagic phase being less severe.
Growth hormone therapy improves body composition, enabling diets to be less restrictive for children today, but it is not normalised.
There's no single dietary approach recommended for PWS, but experts believe that added sugars should be avoided, other carbs should be significantly reduced (particularly starches) and the diet should include healthy fats. Within a restrictive diet, it is important to ensure and maximise nutrient density.
