PhD position (m/f/d) | Fluid Physics, Pattern Formation and Biocomplexity

1 Project background

The PhD student will work on the evaporating droplet set-up, aiming to study the self-assembly of biomolecules under evaporation of microliter sized droplets.

A series of wet-dry cycles with applying external stimuli such as light, heat and magnetic field will be used to understand the effect of environmental factors on the biomolecule self-assembly.

The project is mostly experimental work which requires hand-on skills in microscopy and image analysis. An engineering mindset would be highly advantageous.

2 Your profile

We are looking for excellent, enthusiastic and self-motivated early-career researchers with good communication skills to join active biological matter research team.

The PhD candidate should have:

A Master’s degree (or comparable) in physics, organic chemistry and chemical engineering.
Strong interest in soft matter, microfluidics, fluorescent microscopy, image analysis. Experimental experience with evaporating droplet and would be an asset.
Ability and desire to work in a multi-disciplinary international team.
Good command of English, which is the working language of the department.

We are offering excellent working conditions in a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating research environment. Salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for junior scientists. Working hours are fulltime; salary is 2/3 of E13 TVöD-Bund. Furthermore, we offer opportunities regarding work life balance as well as health promotion services. The PhD position is limited to three years. The starting date is December 1st 2023.

1 简介

Shuhao Zhang is an Assistant Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Technische Universität Berlin under Prof. Volker Markl.

He earned his PhD and BEng from the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, respectively.

His research focuses on designing database systems and big data processing frameworks for modern hardware (NUMA multicore, GPU, mobile CPUs) with a special interest in stream processing systems.

His work has been published in top conferences/journals including SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, SC, USENIX ATC, IEEE TPDS, and IEEE TKDE. He has open-sourced most of his stream processing and database systems, including BriskStream (ICDE’17, SIGMOD’19), TStream/MorphStream (ICDE’20, SIGMOD’23), and OmniDB/FineStream (VLDB’13, ATC’20, TPDS’21).

弹指⼀挥间，我已经从华⼤ Olin 商学院 PhD Program 毕业七年了（which means 误⼈⼦弟整整七年了）。今年 COVID 疫情结束，终于时隔 5 年有机会重回母校风景如画的校园。感慨万千欲辩忘⾔之际，却得知 OlinOM PhD 项目 22 Fall 只⼊学⼀个新同学，⽽ 23 Fall 竟⼀个新同学都没有！

Olin 这个项目叫 Supply Chain, Operations, and Technology (SCOT), 后⽂我还是叫 OM 项目。

At Olin, faculty members in supply chain, operations, manufacturing management and technology have strong engineering backgrounds.

Their research investigates a broad spectrum of issues, especially areas with strategic and tactical implications.

Recently, the emphasis has focused on exciting issues in supply chain management, including global supply chain design; vendor-managed inventory practices; collaborative forecasting; sourcing contracts; dynamic pricing and revenue management; marketing/operations interfaces; information distortion and "bullwhip" effects; information technology uses for improved supply chain performance; inventory management; design and control of queuing systems; and time-based competition and mass customization.

The Supply Chain, Operations, and Technology group focuses its research efforts using quantitative models and analysis to address issues dealing with real-life problems in industry and service organizations.

PhD students benefit from the close collaboration that exists in both teaching and research at Olin.

PhD Artificial intelligence for tracking the politics of climate change adaptation

1 Job description

This PhD position is part of the NWO-VIDI project led by Dr Robbert Biesbroek (Public Administration and Policy group) entitled “High ambitions, (s)low implementation? The politics of tracking adaptation to climate change (2023-2027).
Background of the program: Adapting to the impacts of climate change is necessary and increasingly urgent.

Governments across the globe have increasingly formulated high adaptation ambitions to become more climate resilient.

In order to understand if these ambitions are implemented in practice, tracking progress on adaptation is of critical importance.

This program aims to develop, theorize and empirically test the causes and consequences of the politics of adaptation tracking.

Adopting a comparative approach, the program investigates the political dynamics around the Global Stocktake under the UNFCCC Paris Agreement, the EU Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, and ongoing climate change adaptation developments in several countries from across the globe.

In the program mixed methods are used, combining traditional methods of expert interviews, observations and focus group discussions, with machine learning and quantitative text analysis to analyze the politics of adaptation tracking.
The program takes a solutions-oriented perspective by co-designing politically sensitive intervention pathways with practitioners.

It provides concrete evidence-based insights where and how to intervene in policy processes in order to accelerate the design and execution of adequate and effective frameworks on adaptation tracking.
There are two PhD positions in this NWO-VIDI program.

The position in this call will focus on using Artificial Intelligence methods to track the politics of tracking climate change adaptation.

The other PhD position will focus on conceptualizing and empirically investigating the politics of adaptation tracking using a primarily a qualitative approach.

2 Your tasks

For this PhD position “Artificial intelligence for tracking the politics of climate change adaptation”, you will:

Employ state-of-the art machine learning tools to develop evidence maps on what is already known about the politics of tracking policy for climate and other sustainability challenges
Develop and apply natural language processing methods to analyze the politics of tracking adaptation to climate change from a variety of sources (media, policy documents, minutes, speeches, etc.) at national and global levels
Co-organize and participate in workshops on the politics of adaptation tracking
Lead the development of 4 scientific publications which form the basis of your
PhD dissertation. You will also be involved in developing program-level publications
Present your work at (inter)national scientific conferences and/or symposia

3 Your profile

Completed MSc degree in computational social sciences, computer science, artificial intelligence or a relevant MSc with a quantitative focus (e.g. political science, public administration, sustainability science)
Excellent programming skills (R or Python)
Experience in use of natural language processing tools (e.g. social network analysis, sentiment analysis, topic modelling, etc.) and working with large volumes of textual data. Experience with Deep Learning language models will be a plus.
Ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary setting as the team is consisting of qualitative and quantitative scientists from the social and environmental sciences.
Excellent spoken and written English required for scientific publishing. If your native language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction, you must submit proof of English proficiency from either TOEFL (minimum total score of 100) or IELTS (minimum total score of 7.0).
Demonstrable interest in political dynamics, particularly in the context of sustainability challenges.

4 We offer

Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms of employment. A few highlights from our Collective Labour Agreement include:

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will receive a fully funded PhD position and you will be offered a course program tailored to your needs and the research team.
The gross salary for the first year is € 2.541,- per month rising to € 3.247,- in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. Additionally, a contract for 0.8 FTE can be discussed.
