Didier Drogba, Peter Osgood, Roberto Di Matteo, Branislav Ivanovic, Pat Nevin & Dennis Wise. These players have one thing in particular in common. Not only have they played for the mighty club in SW6, but they have all along with many other players have left a lasting legacy with Chelsea Football Club. Whether it was scoring infamous goals, winning trophies or even winning man of the match awards, there are players that the Chelsea fan base simply admire for their respect for the club & have shown on constant occasions, they’ve left everything on the pitch, the term ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ that fans want to see game in, game out.
Cesar Azpilcueta no doubt a Chelsea legend, fits this category, he would show the same amount of passion & ecstasy whether Chelsea would beat Real Madrid in Europe or Barnsley in the League Cup. A footballer who’s legacy is cemented in stone with Chelsea Football Club.
Now since the end of the season, there have been moments of contemplation & when thinking about players such as Cesar Azpilicueta & even Thiago Silva, these players are not just reaching the end of their extraordinary careers, but these are two particular individuals who represents the last generation of the professional footballer. One generation it seems that cares more about leaving a legacy at a club than the money they receive in their accounts.
Eden Hazard could have left Chelsea for Real Madrid earlier than he did, but because he didn’t, stayed for the season where he was simply unplayable & on more than one occasion, played like a man possessed, just simply having the desire to be remembered as a Chelsea great.
In years to come, when the overall dust has settled over the circus that is Chelsea Football Club for over 12 months, there will no doubt be discussions among the same Chelsea fanbase about players who have left this club in the summer of 2023, players that from the outside looking in, sees the grass is very much greener on the other side.
When you consider so far who has left Chelsea Football Club this summer, have any of the footballers who were given opportunities by the club, leave a positive legacy that sees them as cult heroes at the football club?
Before anyone reading this shouts out ‘Kai! He scored that goal!’, yes absolutely, he should be REMEMBERED for that goal but he will not be REMINISCED so positively either for many many many games he did not turn up & perform to the standard set by a Chelsea player over the last 20 years.
Now for the once described Golden Boy of Chelsea, the young man who Super Frank game him his chance & took it within 30 minutes of his first start against Leicester in August 2019, Mason Mount had the world at his feet, he could have achieved anything for the club that gave him the opportunity to progress & flourish from childhood.
He of all people would have witnessed first-hand, many players becoming legends at the club, such as Frank Lampard, Petr Cech & John Terry. Mason seemed at the start to bleed blue through & through, now the blue blood was diseased it seemed with greed & lies & that resulted in the love affair between Mason Mount & Chelsea Football Club ending in a messy divorce even the best divorce lawyers would stay well clear of.
Make no mistake, there were moments both Frank Lampard & John Terry had opportunities to leave Chelsea at their peak during their careers, but simply put they didn’t. They both saw the bigger picture; they could get the high wages & still win trophies thus creating legacies at the club where simply they haven’t been properly replaced since they both left & people attach the word legend next to their names.
Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy & Mason Mount leaving, doesn’t create a problem, it gives our new boss Pochettino a solution. A solution that he can get footballers to play in a way that will show consistency & freedom to express themselves without having a 2nd rate PE teacher breathing down their necks that started last September.
Make no mistake, Mason has torn up any chance he had to create a positive lasting legacy with Chelsea FC, if anything, to some out there & reading this, he has tarnished it to the point of no return. The sad part is, I would still like to think that he still cares for Chelsea Football Club but I do not see anytime soon Mason on his day off, watching Chelsea on TV or saying. ‘Yes playing for United is what I do now but playing for Chelsea was a dream come true’.
Mason isn’t leaving with people’s blessing; he is leaving a bad taste in the mouths, the mouths of those that felt he could have been the next Frank Lampard.
One day, Mason will say that he did a great job at Chelsea & no one should say different, the problem is however, he did a good job for Chelsea for two years building his reputation as ‘One of Us’, but then after 2021, his never been the same player.
With the ever-growing funds football clubs holds & the ever-increasing wages footballers receive, the motivation to leave a legacy these days is ever dwindling to modern-day footballers.
Mason Mount hasn’t left a legacy with Chelsea, he left two memories; one being the memory of that superb pass for Kai in Porto 2021, the other being now willing to leave for one of our rivals up north.
Yes, Mason & Kai, you won trophies with us & that will never be forgotten but players like Willian, Gudjohnsen & Cahill have truly left a lasting legacy that fans still appreciate to this day.
Some things Mase & Kai, money can’t buy from your new respective clubs, a legacy with Chelsea Football Club.
