Grimes’ new music this year has often resembled roguish, pessimistic concept art. With stomping nü-metal transhumanism and sinister synthpop about abusive power dynamics, the dystopian conceit of her upcoming climate change-themed Miss Anthropocene has so far hinged on audacious genre-hopping and overly affected lyrics, for better and for worse. Grimes’ latest offering, the six-minute downtempo odyssey “So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth,” feels like an inevitable comedown from the rave-ups, with the forceful theatrics supplanted by a languid pace and insular frame of mind.
Grimes seems even more emotionally fraught than we last heard on the slick, breathless “Violence.” She coos of feeling so “weighed down” by love that she fears the ground beneath her could give way, extending another dark, complicated notion of violence as comfort. Of course, Grimes had a more elaborate storyline in mind for the song: Back in February, she teased a concept art sketch of a dragon and an angel locked in mid-air combat above the caption, “Massive battle scene.” You can imagine that fantastical deathmatch in torpid slow motion, then, with Grimes’ murmured vocals and gloomy, minimalist production alluding to more unrest to come.
