Extinct megatooth sharks may have been one of the most dominant apex predators in the ancient marine world. Kast et al. studied the megatooth’s diet and found that it held a higher place in the marine food web than any other known marine species, extinct or living. The group reconstructed the sharks’ diets from nitrogen isotype ratios in fossilized teeth. Identifying the megatooth sharks’ position in the ancient marine food web is crucial to understanding their evolution and extinction.

Overlapping trajectories of swarming bacteria cells. Groups of bacteria can organize in multiple ways, including swarming and dense, stationary biofilms. The shift between these disparate states exemplifies how bacteria adapt to challenging environments. Worlitzer et al. studied the swarm to biofilm transition on both an individual and collective scale. Analysis of bacterial dynamics shows that a few individual cells start the formation of biofilms by trapping more bacteria inside a stationary cluster. Both biological and physical processes facilitate the transition from swarm to biofilm, a key insight into the formation of biofilms.

Capturing three-dimensional cellular structures using conventional super-resolution microscopy is challenging because of limited resolution. Thiele et al. remedy this by combining super-resolution microscopy and metal-induced energy transfer. This method allows nanometer-scale imaging of sub-cellular structures as well as imaging of two different structures simultaneously.

A rigid, 3D printed “island” sits atop a stretchable polymer. Currently, repetitive and excessive strain cause stretchable electronics to fail, limiting their practical use. To remedy this, Yang et al. developed Ferris wheel-shaped islands (FWI) that withstand the strain of continuous stretching, twisting, poking, and crumpling. Unlike conventional circle- and square-shaped islands in soft polymer matrix, the geometrically engineered FWIs are highly durable. Yang et al.’s approach applies to a wide variety of stretchable electronics and could hasten commercialization in the near future.
