(just) around the corner idiom

  • not far away, or going to happen soon. 指日可待; 就在拐角处; 即将到来; 即将来临; 近在咫尺

【例1】There's a great restaurant just around the corner. 在拐角处就有一家非常好的餐馆。

【例2】I'm feeling a little depressed at the moment, but I'm sure good times are just around the corner. 我现在感觉有点沮丧,但我相信美好的时光就在眼前。


cools off

  • 冷却下来

【例1】China continues to sizzle while Brazil cools off.  虽然巴西市场有所冷却,但中国市场依然炙手可热。

【例2】And finally, summer changes to fall in late September when the weather cools off, and the trees begin to change colors. 最后,9月末夏天转为秋天,天气凉爽起来,树木颜色开始发生变化。


sweat n.

pore n.

【例1】Sweat passes through the pores and cools the body down. 汗液通过毛孔使身体降温。

【例2】Pimples form when pores become blocked with dirt. 当毛孔被污垢堵塞时,就会形成粉刺。


evaporate v.

  • to cause a liquid to change to a gas, especially by heating. 蒸发

【例1】As the water evaporates, a crust of salt is left on the surface of the soil. 随着水分的蒸发,地面上留下了一层结晶盐。

【例2】Your dreams always seem to evaporate, and nothing ever quite matches expectations. 你的梦想似乎总是逐渐破灭,从来没有什么事情能完全符合你的预期。


hydrate v.

  • to make your body absorb water or other liquid. 使吸入水分; 补水

【例1】oils that help hydrate your skin. 帮助皮肤补水的精油。

【例2】Make sure you hydrate (= drink something) before you exercise. 运动前一定要补充好水分。


ray n.

  • a narrow beam of light, heat, etc. travelling in a straight line from its place of origin. 光线

【例1】A ray of sunshine shone through a gap in the clouds. 一缕阳光透过云层的缝隙照了进来。

【例2】Light rays bend as they pass from air to water. 光线从空气进入水中时会弯曲。


darken v.

1.get darker (使)变暗,变黑

【例1】The sun had darkened his skin. 太阳把他的皮肤晒黑了。

【例2】The sky began to darken as the storm approached. 暴风雨来临时天空变得黑沉沉的。

2.If someone's mood darkens or if something darkens their mood, they suddenly become rather unhappy. (使)变得阴郁; (使)心情沉重

【例3】My sunny mood suddenly darkened. 我的好心情突然变得阴郁起来。


suntan/tan n.

  • pleasantly brown skin caused by being in hot sun. 晒黑

【例1】Where have you been to get that suntan? 你上哪儿去了,晒得黑黑的?

【例2】She couldn't wait to get back and show off her suntan. 她迫不及待地要回去炫耀一下她晒黑的皮肤。


Cover up 

  • 遮住

【例1】The wings of a crow can never cover up the sun. 乌鸦的翅膀遮不住太阳。

  • to stop people discovering the truth about something bad. 掩盖; 掩饰; 包庇; 掩盖真相

【例2】Irene's cleaning the floor had been a calculated attempt to cover up her crime.  艾琳擦洗地板就是为了蓄意掩盖她的罪行。


sunburn n.

  • a condition in which your skin is sore and red because you have spent too long in the strong heat of the sun. 晒斑;晒伤

【例1】I was concerned that I was not protected and would get a sunburn. 我很担心我未作任何防护可能会被晒伤。

【例2】Sunburn is painful and potentially dangerous. 晒伤不仅疼,还有潜在危险。


Sunscreen n.

  • a substance that you put on your skin to prevent it from being damaged by the sun. 防晒霜

【例1】Protect your child from direct sunlight by using a sunscreen. 给孩子搽点防晒霜以防日光直接照射。

【例2】Even dark-skinned women should use sunscreens. 即使黑皮肤的女性也应该涂抹防晒霜。


heat exhaustion n.

  • a condition in which you feel very weak and sick after being in a very hot place for too long. 热衰竭;中暑

【例1】He passed out from heat exhaustion. 他因中暑而晕倒。

【例2】A person suffering heat exhaustion feels weak and extremely tired. 热衰竭的人会感到虚弱和极度疲劳。


clammy adj.

  • sticky and slightly wet in an unpleasant way. 黏糊糊的; 湿漉漉的

【例1】My hands felt all clammy. 我的手感到湿漉漉的。

【例2】It was a hot, clammy day. 那是又热又湿的一天。
