TOKYO -- Japanese department store chain Takashimaya will close its flagship store in Shanghai in August and halt its operations in China, Nikkei has learned.
The store has been losing money and the Osaka-based company decided it would be difficult to turn the business around as private consumption has slowed in China amid the trade war with the U.S.
The retailer will hold talks with local authorities on the store's closure. The focus of Takashimaya's overseas operations will shift to Southeast Asia, a region the company sees as more promising.

Takashimaya is also considering opening another outlet in Vietnam. The store in Singapore is doing well, generating some 20% of the company's operating profit. The Bangkok outlet opened in the fall of 2018.
The company's goal is to turn shoppers into repeat customers at the three Southeast Asia locations.

Article strikes me as this is just a business failure and the trade war is a convenient excuse. When LV leaves, then really worry.

That’s probably true, a lot of foreign companies just get China wrong. However, many could also legitimately argue that it’s not a level playing field.

They (Chinese building companies like Vanke, Wanda, et al) oversaturated and overbuilt with shopping malls. There are so many that while occupancy from stores seem full, you can often count the amount of people not there for work in the massive places on 2 hands. This was before the trade war. I don't think this brand has a flagship level of desirability to the Chinese and would probably have benefited more from an online presence. Chinese love spending, but let's face it, the GDP per capita isn't high enough to support a bajillion of high end, high priced brands. The trade war just helps to trim the fat more quickly as people are a bit more worried to make frivolous purchases. I'm sure those that do are sticking with the go to brands.

It's the Field of Dreams (if you build it, they will come aka buy investment property) model and almost always accompanied by housing nearby by the same developer. Oh, I'm not talking about empty at peak times. As a dad, right when school ends those Fundo kids indoor play parks are like a scene out of Mad Max starring midgets.
But the rest of the place is empty most of the time.

Haha, all those shiny luxury malls always end up filled up with pee whistling, forever unwashed and badly dressed grandmas as a result; they’ll go there just for the free aircon and a chair but buy bugger all. Especially if there’s a Decathlon in there, they’re just using it as a free playpark for the grandchildren. Yet, local customs dictate that you can’t drive them away from the place.

I once saw a Wanda out in a Tier 2.5 city, then you drive 10 minutes down the road and you see a rice patty.
Everyone in the car was just confused, Did they expect farmers to buy their stuff?

There are some wealthy tuhao farmers and corrupt officials that will buy the most garish, awful shit from Western luxury brands for the 3x the price that they are sold at in Europe.

They probably all have multiple bank accounts with savings spread across them because they’re always fearful that one of the big banks could suddenly collapse. Of course, that means offers for multiple credit cards and other loan services; not even including the shadier financial services that some may have to resort to.
But all those well dressed young ladies with the latest iPhone just need to find a rich old guy in a few years or do some secret hooker work, so it’s all good right?

Even in Shanghai (yes, not real China) it seems like there's some rule that some shops have to completely tear down and rebuild every 2-3 years just to provide construction/renovation crews with a job.
Lord knows that the Lawson has to completely gut itself in order to turn the snack shelf 180 degrees.

Those Lawsons/711s/Meiyijias just pop up anywhere and kill the shitty local mom and pop shop nearby that kept some migrant workers there for a few decades. Although I have little sympathy because those shops were shit and deserved to die, especially if the big players start to dominate in every field.

I can save 1 kuai on my piss warm Chindow there, tho. 711 also don't carry Double Happiness cigarettes.

That sounds about right in general. Though it seems like the city government itself is keen enough on stamping out anything that might possibly give a neighborhood a unique character.

I shall also fold and burn some extra aluminum foil in a trashcan outside my communal hallway in honor of the men who tear up and shittily repave the same sidewalk in front of the complex five times a year. True masters they are.

Not sure Wang Jianlin agrees. Is he still passportless? He owns a lot of US holdings. Not very patriotic.
